Living in Tener Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Tener Hall was renovated in Phase 1C alongside Pinchot and Brumbaugh, reopening in fall 2019. Rooms are standard doubles at approximately 190 square feet. Beds are XL twin (80"×36") on adjustable frames; full lofting is not permitted in Tener — ceiling clearance under 7'6" rules it out. Penn State supplies the bed frame, mattress, desk, chair, dresser, closet, window blinds, overhead light, and trash and recycling bins.
Day to day
Tener has central AC as part of the East Halls renovation now fully complete across all buildings. Findlay Commons, the on-site East Halls dining hall, is a short walk away. Students need to supply everything Penn State doesn't: desk lamp, fan, shower caddy, XL twin bedding, towels, area rug, full-length mirror, and surge protector. Proximity to Pinchot and Brumbaugh makes the Phase 1C cluster a cohesive little neighborhood within East Halls.
Move-in day
Move-in is mid-to-late August — the specific window will be on the assignment paperwork. Tener is on the east side of campus, roughly 10–15 minutes on foot to Old Main and the HUB-Robeson Center. Standard doubles are tight at ~190 square feet, so coordinating with the roommate before arriving pays off.
Tener Hall FAQ
- Does Tener Hall have air conditioning?
- Yes. Tener has central AC following the completed East Halls renovation program, which wrapped up its final phase in 2024. Tener's own Phase 1C renovation in 2019 addressed the building's mechanical systems, and central cooling has been active since. No personal cooling unit is needed, and personal AC is prohibited under Penn State's residence hall policy. The central system handles the late-August heat during move-in week, which is typically hot and humid in State College.
- Can I bring my own mini-fridge to Tener Hall?
- No. Penn State prohibits personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves in all residence halls, and Tener is no exception. This is consistently the most common packing mistake Penn State families make. The only approved option is renting through the campus MicroFridge rental program, which provides a combined refrigerator and microwave unit delivered before move-in. Book it early — units are limited and sell out before fall. Bringing your own mini-fridge is a fineable violation that will be flagged during move-in day RA walkthroughs.
- What other halls are near Tener?
- Tener is part of the Phase 1C renovation cluster alongside Pinchot and Brumbaugh, so those three buildings are close neighbors within the East Halls complex. In practice, students in all three halls share proximity to Findlay Commons dining hall, which is the on-site dining anchor for East Halls and within easy walking distance of Tener. The cluster feel makes the area social — residents of all three Phase 1C buildings end up crossing paths regularly at meals and in the common areas.
- Can students loft their beds in Tener Hall?
- Bed frames in Tener are adjustable, which gives students some ability to raise the sleeping surface and create under-bed storage clearance — but full loft kits are not permitted. Ceiling height in Tener, as in most East Halls buildings, runs under 7'6" and doesn't allow full lofting. There simply isn't enough headroom to sit upright in a fully raised bed. Only Earle and Martin Halls have ceiling heights that support full lofting at Penn State. Don't purchase a loft kit for Tener.
