Living in Stone Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Stone Hall reopened in August 2024 after a Phase 2C renovation — it's one of the most recently updated buildings in East Halls and effectively feels brand new. Rooms are standard doubles at around 190 square feet. Beds are XL twin (80"×36") on adjustable frames; full lofting is not permitted in Stone due to ceiling clearance. Penn State furnishes the bed frame, mattress, desk, chair, dresser, closet, window blinds, overhead light, and trash and recycling bins.
Day to day
Because Stone's renovation finished in 2024, the HVAC, electrical, and finishes are all current — central AC is included. Findlay Commons is the on-site East Halls dining hall a short walk from Stone. Beyond what Penn State provides, students need a desk lamp, fan, shower caddy, XL twin bedding, towels, area rug, full-length mirror, and surge protector.
Move-in day
Move-in windows are mid-to-late August — your assignment paperwork will confirm the exact slot. Stone is on the east side of campus, about 10–15 minutes on foot to Old Main and the HUB-Robeson Center. Two people in ~190 square feet go smoother when roommates coordinate ahead of time on who's bringing what.
Stone Hall FAQ
- Does Stone Hall have air conditioning?
- Yes. Stone's Phase 2C renovation, completed in August 2024, included full central air conditioning throughout the building. Because this was a complete renovation rather than a patch job, the HVAC system is brand new and reliable. All East Halls buildings now have central AC, making personal units both unnecessary and prohibited under Penn State's housing policy. Students arriving for fall 2026 move-in will have a climate-controlled room from day one — no scramble for a fan or window unit needed.
- Can I bring my own mini-fridge to Stone Hall?
- No. Penn State's policy prohibits personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves in all residence halls, and Stone is no exception. This trips up a lot of families who assume a newly renovated building might have different rules — the policy is university-wide. The compliant path is renting through Penn State's campus MicroFridge program, which delivers a combined fridge and microwave unit to the room before move-in and retrieves it at checkout. Bringing your own mini-fridge or microwave is a fineable violation.
- How new is Stone Hall?
- Stone Hall completed a full Phase 2C renovation and reopened in August 2024, making it one of the two or three freshest buildings in East Halls going into fall 2026. Alongside Hastings and Snyder — the other 2024 completions — Stone represents the newest interior in the complex. If your student cares about updated finishes, new bathrooms, and modern electrical infrastructure, Stone is a strong option. The building was fully gutted and rebuilt, not just cosmetically refreshed.
- Is there wired internet in Stone Hall?
- Yes. Penn State provides both wired ethernet and Wi-Fi in all residence hall rooms, including Stone. Wired is worth using if your student games, video calls frequently, or has heavy uploads — it's faster and more stable than shared Wi-Fi in a building full of students streaming simultaneously. Bring a standard ethernet cable (CAT6 recommended, at least 10 feet). The ethernet port is typically near the desk. Wi-Fi is also active and perfectly usable for most day-to-day tasks.
