Living in Curtin Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Curtin is another Phase 2B renovation that reopened in 2023 alongside Bigler, so the interior feels current — new flooring, updated lighting, and renovated bathrooms. Doubles land in the same ~190 square foot range as every other East Halls building, and the layout is straightforward: two of each piece of furniture with a narrow shared center. Ceiling height is under 7'6", which rules out full lofting, but the adjustable frame still lets students raise the bed for under-bed storage.

Day to day

Floor bathrooms are community-style. The 2023 renovation improved the bathroom fixtures and finishes noticeably compared to older East Halls buildings. Findlay Commons dining is inside the East Halls complex — short enough that students treat it as their kitchen rather than a destination. Common areas and lounges on each floor give residents somewhere to decompress outside their room.

Move-in day

Curtin is on the eastern side of campus, which puts it about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from Old Main and the HUB. Your move-in arrival slot will be pre-assigned — the university staggers them to prevent gridlock, so check your housing portal for your specific window. Because 2023 renovation hallways can be tighter than older buildings, collapsible carts and soft duffels are easier to navigate than hard-sided luggage.

Curtin Hall FAQ

Does Curtin Hall have air conditioning?
Yes. Central air conditioning is standard across all East Halls following the renovation program completed in 2024, and Curtin is fully included. Curtin's Phase 2B renovation in 2023 updated the mechanical systems along with the rest of the building, so the HVAC is fresh. Personal AC units are not allowed under Penn State's housing policy and are unnecessary given the central system. Don't pack a window unit — it won't make it past the RA walkthrough on move-in day.
Can I bring my own mini-fridge to Curtin Hall?
No — this is one of the most common mistakes families make at Penn State, and new Curtin residents are not exempt. Both personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves are prohibited in all Penn State residence halls. If your student wants a fridge or microwave in the room, the only approved option is renting a MicroFridge unit through Penn State's campus rental program — a combined appliance delivered before move-in. Violations are subject to fines and immediate removal of the item during the RA walkthrough.
How new does Curtin Hall feel after the renovation?
Curtin reopened in 2023 as part of Phase 2B, which makes its finishes among the freshest in East Halls going into fall 2026. Expect updated flooring, modern bathroom fixtures, improved lighting, and freshly painted walls — the interior is genuinely current. It's not a luxury building by any stretch; the footprint is still compact and the rooms are still tight. But it doesn't feel tired or worn the way an unrenovated building would, and the community bathrooms have noticeably better fixtures than older East Halls stock.
What size beds are in Curtin Hall, and where do I find XL Twin sheets?
All Penn State East Halls beds — including Curtin — are XL Twin, measuring 80 inches long by 36 inches wide. Standard twin sheets are only 75 inches long and will come untucked constantly on an 80-inch mattress. Search specifically for 'XL Twin' at Target, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, or any college-specific bedding retailer. Most college packing bundles are already XL Twin sized, but verify before you buy. A fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillow, pillowcase, and mattress protector are all the student's responsibility to bring.
Is Curtin Hall a good hall to live in?
That depends on what you're optimizing for, but here's what's verified: Curtin Hall has XL Twin · 80"×36" beds with Adjustable frame · loft height varies of under-bed storage, and is fully air conditioned. Penn State provides Bed frame & XL twin mattress, desk, chair, dresser, closet, window blinds, overhead light, trash & recycling bin, wired ethernet + Wi-Fi in every room. Compare those specifics against your priorities — or see how Curtin Hall stacks up against Penn State's other halls above.
