Living in Bigler Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Bigler is one of Penn State's Phase 2B East Halls renovations, reopened in 2023 with fresh finishes and updated fixtures. Standard doubles run around 190 square feet — about the size of a large walk-in closet split between two people. You get a bed, desk, chair, dresser, and closet on each side, which leaves a narrow corridor of floor space in between. Ceiling height stays under 7'6", so plan on a raised frame rather than a full loft.
Day to day
Bathrooms are community-style, shared by the floor — factor that into your morning routine timeline. Findlay Commons dining hall sits within the East Halls complex, so your student won't be hiking across campus in the rain to eat. The 2023 renovation means the hallways, bathrooms, and common areas are in noticeably better shape than older unrenovated buildings nearby.
Move-in day
Bigler sits in the eastern cluster of Penn State's campus, roughly 10 to 15 minutes on foot to Old Main and the HUB-Robeson Center. Move-in runs mid-to-late August and is staggered by assignment — you'll get a specific arrival window in your move-in materials. Loading happens curbside; the building's interior corridors are narrow post-renovation, so collapsible carts and soft-sided bags move faster than rigid trunks.
Bigler Hall FAQ
- Does Bigler Hall have air conditioning?
- Yes. The East Halls Renovation — completed in 2024 — brought central air conditioning to every building in the complex, including Bigler. This was a major infrastructure upgrade: older Penn State residence halls historically relied on window units or had no cooling at all. You don't need to bring a portable unit, and personal AC equipment is explicitly prohibited under Penn State's housing policy. The central system keeps rooms comfortable through August move-in and into the early fall weeks.
- Can I bring my own mini-fridge to Bigler Hall?
- No — and this catches a lot of families off guard. Penn State prohibits both personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves in all residence halls, including Bigler. If your student wants refrigeration or microwave access in the room, they must rent a MicroFridge unit through Penn State's campus rental program — a combined appliance that covers both needs in a single unit. Bringing your own mini-fridge from home is a fineable policy violation, and it will be flagged and confiscated during the RA move-in walkthrough.
- Can I loft the bed in Bigler Hall?
- Partial raising is fine — the adjustable bed frame that comes with the room lets students raise the sleeping surface to gain under-bed storage clearance. But full lofting is not permitted in Bigler. The ceiling height runs under 7'6", which leaves too little headroom to sit upright in a fully lofted bed. This is true of most East Halls buildings. If a full loft is important to your student, request Earle or Martin Hall specifically — those are the only two East Halls buildings where ceiling clearance makes full lofting practical.
- What size bedding fits the beds in Bigler Hall?
- The beds are XL Twin, measuring 80 inches long by 36 inches wide. Standard twin sheets are only 75 inches long and will come untucked constantly — you need XL Twin specifically. This sizing is consistent across every Penn State East Halls room. Search for 'XL Twin' rather than just 'twin' at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, or Amazon. Most college packing bundles are already sized correctly, but verify before you buy. A mattress protector in XL Twin is also a good idea.
