Living in McKean Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
McKean was part of Phase 1B of the East Halls renovation and reopened in Fall 2018, making it one of the earlier buildings to come back online. Doubles are the primary room type, and like all East Halls, the square footage is around 190 square feet. The bed frames are adjustable but full lofting is not practical in McKean — that's only workable in Earle and Martin. Penn State provides the XL twin mattress, desk, chair, dresser, closet, and the usual room furnishings.
Day to day
The standout feature at McKean is the bathroom setup: private single-user bathrooms rather than the community-style shared floors you find in most East Halls buildings. For families where bathroom privacy is a real concern, this is a meaningful difference. McKean is physically connected to Pennypacker Hall and the two share the same Phase 1B renovation footprint. Findlay Commons dining is in the complex, and central AC keeps the rooms comfortable.
Move-in day
McKean sits in the East Halls complex on the east side of campus, roughly 10 to 15 minutes from Old Main on foot. The building is co-ed. Move-in is mid-to-late August with assigned time windows — the shared lot with Pennypacker means two halls of families arriving in the same stretch, so the assigned slot is worth taking seriously.

- Does McKean Hall have private bathrooms?
- Yes — McKean has private single-user bathrooms attached to each room, which is a meaningful step up from the community-style bathrooms you find in most East Halls buildings. No scheduling around hallmates, no shared shower stalls, no flip-flops required for the walk down the hall. For students with strong preferences about bathroom privacy, McKean and its paired building Pennypacker are among the best options in East Halls. Earle is the only building that pairs private bathrooms with full lofting capability.
- Can students bring their own fridge to McKean Hall?
- No. Penn State prohibits personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves in all residence halls, McKean included — regardless of bathroom setup or building quality. The approved option is the campus MicroFridge rental program, which provides a combined refrigerator and microwave unit delivered to the room before move-in and retrieved at checkout. This is the most common packing mistake Penn State families make: don't order or buy a mini-fridge expecting to bring it on move-in day. Reserve the MicroFridge rental through the housing portal instead.
- Does McKean Hall have air conditioning?
- Yes. McKean received central air conditioning as part of the Phase 1B renovation that finished in 2018, and the broader East Halls renovation program extended full AC coverage to every building in the complex by 2024. No window units are needed, and personal AC equipment is prohibited under Penn State's housing policy.
