Living in Brumbaugh Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Brumbaugh was renovated in Phase 1C and reopened in fall 2019, making it one of the earlier-finished buildings in the East Halls overhaul. Doubles here follow the same ~190 square foot footprint as the rest of the East cluster — two students, two of everything, and not a lot of aisle left. The finishes are a few years older than the 2023 reopenings but still well ahead of any unrenovated stock. Ceiling height is under 7'6", so raised frames work; full lofts don't.
Day to day
Brumbaugh clusters with Pinchot, Tener, and Sproul — a tight neighborhood of mid-size halls that share the same general vibe and foot traffic patterns. Community bathrooms are on each floor. Findlay Commons is the dining anchor for the whole East Halls area and is close enough that most students walk over multiple times a day without thinking about it.
Move-in day
The building is on the eastern edge of campus, putting it 10 to 15 minutes from the center of campus on foot. Your move-in window will be assigned — don't assume you can arrive anytime on move-in day. Bring flat under-bed storage bins; they're the most practical way to use the clearance under the adjustable frame, and collapsible bags will serve you better than hard-shell luggage in the hallways.

- Does Brumbaugh Hall have air conditioning?
- Yes. All East Halls buildings — including Brumbaugh — have central air conditioning following the East Halls Renovation completed in 2024. The phased renovation brought each building's HVAC up to modern standards, and Brumbaugh was covered in its Phase 1C update. Personal window units are not needed and are explicitly prohibited under Penn State's housing policy. The central system handles cooling through the hot August move-in period and into early fall, so your student can focus on packing the things that actually matter.
- Can I bring my own mini-fridge to Brumbaugh Hall?
- No. Penn State bans personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves campuswide, and Brumbaugh is covered by that policy.
