Living in Martin Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Martin is new construction from 2018 — not a renovation — so the bones are modern from the start. Doubles here share the same roughly 190 square foot footprint as the rest of East Halls, but the ceiling height is one of only two in the complex (along with Earle) where full lofting is actually permitted. If your student wants to loft the bed to create floor space underneath, Martin and Earle are where that works without running into the ceiling. Bed frames are adjustable and Penn State supplies the XL twin mattress, desk, chair, dresser, and closet.
Day to day
Martin uses community-style bathrooms shared by the floor, which is the standard setup for most East Halls buildings. Findlay Commons dining is right in the complex, so day-to-day meals don't require a hike. Central air conditioning is standard in all East Halls, Martin included, so the room stays comfortable without a window unit.
Move-in day
Martin is located in the East Halls complex on the east side of campus, about 10 to 15 minutes on foot to Old Main and the HUB-Robeson Center. Move-in is mid-to-late August with assigned arrival windows — the East Halls loop can back up quickly, so sticking to your slot matters. Students assigned to Martin sometimes compare notes with Earle residents since both buildings are from the same era and permit full lofting.

- Can I loft my bed in Martin Hall?
- Yes — Martin Hall is one of only two East Halls buildings (the other is Earle) where full lofting is permitted and practical. The ceiling height in Martin clears the threshold that makes it workable — most other East Halls buildings run under 7'6" of clearance, which doesn't leave enough room to sit upright in a fully raised bed. Martin's 2018 new construction was designed with that height in mind. If full lofting is a priority for your student, Martin and Earle are the only two realistic options in East Halls.
- Can my student bring a mini-fridge to Martin Hall?
- No. Penn State's housing policy prohibits personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves in all residence halls, and Martin is no exception. The only approved option for in-room refrigeration or microwave access is the campus MicroFridge rental program — a single combined unit delivered before move-in. This trips up a lot of families every year: buying a mini-fridge on Amazon before move-in and then having to haul it back home on move-in day is one of the most common and avoidable Penn State freshman mistakes.
- Does Martin Hall have air conditioning?
- Yes. All East Halls buildings, including Martin, have central air conditioning following the East Halls Renovation program completed in 2024. Martin's 2018 new construction already had modern HVAC infrastructure, and the broader complex AC rollout ensured consistent cooling across every building in the cluster. Personal AC units are not permitted under Penn State's housing policy and are not needed — the central system handles the late-summer heat that makes August move-in week uncomfortable in older dorms.
- How does Martin Hall compare to Earle Hall?
- The two buildings are frequently compared because both are newer construction — Earle 2017, Martin 2018 — and both permit full lofting, which is rare in East Halls. The main difference families notice is bathrooms: Earle has private single-user bathrooms in every room, while Martin uses community-style bathrooms shared by the floor. For students who prioritize bathroom privacy, Earle is the clear choice.
