Common questions about Penn State dorms

Do Penn State dorms have air conditioning?

Yes — all 19 halls available for Fall 2026 have central AC. The $450M East Halls renovation is 100% complete as of Fall 2024, and all 16 East Halls buildings have been online with central air since then. Two newly renovated Pollock halls — Ritner and Wolf — come online for Fall 2026 and also have central AC. Robinson Hall in North is a 2017 new build with AC as well. Unlike many universities where AC coverage is partial or per-floor, every Penn State freshman hall for 2026 is fully air-conditioned.

What size bed does Penn State use?

All renovated Penn State halls use XL Twin beds (80"×36"). That width is 36 inches — buy bedding explicitly labeled XL Twin, as standard twin sheets will not fit properly. Frames are adjustable and can be raised for under-bed storage. Full lofting is only permitted in Earle Hall and Martin Hall, where ceiling height allows it. In other East Halls buildings, you can raise the frame but not fully loft it. Robinson Hall in North follows the same XL Twin standard.

Can I bring a mini-fridge to Penn State?

No. Penn State prohibits personal fridges and personal microwaves in all residence halls. The university runs a MicroFridge rental program — a combined mini-fridge and microwave unit that you rent for the academic year and return at the end. If you want refrigerator and microwave access, the rental is the only approved way to get both. Bringing your own appliances is a policy violation and the item can be confiscated during room inspections. Check the Penn State Housing website for current rental pricing.

Can I bring a toaster or Instant Pot to Penn State?

No. Penn State's prohibited appliance list is extensive. Banned items include toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, Instant Pots, hot plates, electric skillets, and space heaters. Personal microwaves and personal mini-fridges are also prohibited. Only the campus-provided appliances and items rented through approved Penn State programs are permitted. The reasoning is both fire safety and electrical load — residence hall wiring is not designed for high-draw personal cooking appliances. The MicroFridge rental is the sanctioned all-in-one solution for food storage and reheating.

When does Penn State send housing assignments?

Penn State typically releases freshman housing assignments in July. You'll receive an email through your Penn State account with your specific hall and room. East Halls and Pollock Halls are in different parts of campus, and for Fall 2026 the newly renovated Ritner and Wolf halls in Pollock come online — so the assignment letter will clarify which area you're in. Don't buy anything hall-specific until you know your assignment; bed size (XL Twin) and the MicroFridge rental situation are the same across all halls.
