Living in Snyder Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Snyder was originally built in 1965, but the 2024 Phase 2C renovation was a complete gut-and-rebuild — not a refresh. The building now offers standard doubles plus one quad room per floor, making it the only East Hall with four-person rooms. All beds are XL twin (80"×36") on adjustable frames; full lofting is not permitted given ceiling clearance. Penn State furnishes the bed frame, mattress, desk, chair, dresser, closet, window blinds, overhead light, and bins.
Day to day
The quad rooms — one per floor — are worth noting if your student has a group of four friends who want to live together; it's genuinely rare in East Halls. Central AC is in place throughout the building after the 2024 renovation. Findlay Commons is the on-site East Halls dining hall. Pack the things Penn State doesn't provide: desk lamp, fan, shower caddy, XL twin bedding, towels, area rug, full-length mirror, and surge protector.
Move-in day
Move-in runs mid-to-late August; confirm the exact date on your assignment paperwork. Snyder sits on the east side of campus, about 10–15 minutes on foot to Old Main and the HUB-Robeson Center. The doubles run about 190 square feet — coordinate with your student's roommate before hauling in duplicate furniture.
Snyder Hall FAQ
- Does Snyder Hall have air conditioning?
- Yes. The 2024 Phase 2C renovation included full central air conditioning throughout Snyder. The gut-and-rebuild nature of the renovation means the HVAC system is brand new, not patched onto older infrastructure. No personal unit is needed — and personal AC is explicitly prohibited under Penn State's residence hall policy. With a brand-new central system in place, your student's room will be comfortable through the late August heat that typically greets incoming freshmen during move-in week.
- Can I bring my own mini-fridge to Snyder Hall?
- No. Penn State prohibits personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves campus-wide, and Snyder is no exception. This is one of the most common move-in mistakes Penn State families make. The only approved option is the campus MicroFridge rental program, which provides a single combined fridge and microwave unit. You reserve it in advance, it's delivered before move-in, and Penn State picks it up at checkout. Bringing your own is a fineable offense, and the RA will flag it on move-in day.
- What makes Snyder Hall different from other East Halls buildings?
- Snyder is the only East Halls building with quad rooms — one four-person room per floor. If your student has a friend group of four who all want to live together, Snyder is the only place in East Halls where that works. Beyond the quads, the 2024 Phase 2C renovation was a complete gut-and-rebuild, so the building is effectively brand new inside despite its 1965 exterior. The 2024 completion date also makes it one of the freshest interiors in the entire East Halls complex.
- Can students loft their beds in Snyder Hall?
- Bed frames in Snyder are adjustable, allowing students to raise the sleeping surface and gain some clearance for under-bed storage bins — but full lofting is not allowed. Ceiling clearance in Snyder, as in most East Halls buildings, doesn't accommodate a full loft kit. The only East Halls buildings where full lofting is permitted are Earle and Martin, both of which were built with that ceiling height in mind. Don't purchase or bring a loft kit for Snyder; it won't be approved.
