Living in Pinchot Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Pinchot is an East Halls building — it is not in Pollock, despite occasional confusion online. Renovated in 2019 as part of Phase 1C alongside Brumbaugh and Tener, it offers standard doubles of roughly 190 square feet. Beds are XL twin (80"×36") on adjustable frames, but full lofting is not permitted here — ceiling clearance won't allow it. Penn State provides the bed frame, mattress, desk, chair, dresser, closet, window blinds, overhead light, and trash bin.
Day to day
All East Halls, including Pinchot, have central AC since the 2024 renovation completion, so your student won't need a personal unit — and personal AC is prohibited anyway. Findlay Commons is the on-site dining hall for East Halls, a short walk from Pinchot. Pack the things Penn State doesn't supply: a desk lamp, fan, shower caddy, bedding, towels, area rug, full-length mirror, and a surge protector.
Move-in day
Move-in is typically mid-to-late August — check your assignment letter for the specific window. Pinchot is on the east side of campus, roughly a 10–15 minute walk to Old Main and the HUB-Robeson Center. Bring everything on move-in day that you'd otherwise pay to ship; doubles are cozy at ~190 sq ft, so measure furniture against your roommate before you arrive.
Pinchot Hall FAQ
- Does Pinchot Hall have air conditioning?
- Yes. Pinchot has central AC as part of the East Halls renovation completed in 2024. Pinchot's Phase 1C update in 2019 addressed the building's mechanical systems, and the broader campus rollout ensured cooling was active across all East Halls buildings. You do not need to bring a personal unit — and personal AC is on Penn State's prohibited items list regardless. The central system keeps rooms livable during August move-in week, which tends to be hot in State College.
- Can I bring my own mini-fridge to Pinchot Hall?
- No — Penn State prohibits personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves in all residence halls, including Pinchot. This is one of the most common packing mistakes Penn State families make. Students who want refrigeration or microwave access must rent a MicroFridge combo unit through Penn State's campus rental program — a single combined appliance that covers both needs. Bringing your own mini-fridge is a fineable violation, and it will be confiscated during the RA walkthrough on move-in day.
- Is Pinchot Hall in East Halls or Pollock Halls?
- Pinchot is in East Halls, not Pollock. It shares a renovation phase — Phase 1C, completed in 2019 — with Brumbaugh and Tener, both of which are also East Halls buildings. If you see references to a 'Pollock Pinchot,' that's an error that appears in some third-party housing sites. Pinchot's dining anchor is Findlay Commons (East Halls dining), not Warnock Commons, which is the Pollock area dining hall. The location puts your student about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from Old Main.
- Can my student loft the bed in Pinchot Hall?
- The bed frame is adjustable, which lets students raise the sleeping surface to gain under-bed storage clearance — but full lofting is not permitted in Pinchot. The ceiling clearance runs under 7'6", which is not enough headroom to sit upright in a fully lofted bed. Full lofting is only allowed in Earle and Martin Halls, where the buildings were specifically designed or renovated with higher ceiling clearance for it. Don't order a standalone loft kit for Pinchot — it won't be approved.
