Living in Earle Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Earle was built new in 2017 — not renovated, built from scratch — and the difference is apparent the moment you walk in. It's a doubles-only building with 336 beds, and every room comes with a private single-user bathroom, which is essentially unheard of in Penn State East Halls. The ceiling height was engineered to accommodate full lofting, making it one of only two East Halls buildings (along with Martin) where that's genuinely practical. It's consistently one of the most requested freshman assignments in the complex.

Day to day

The private bathroom situation changes the daily calculus entirely — no scheduling around hallmates, no flip-flops required for the shower, no waiting for a sink. That alone makes Earle feel like a different category of dorm. Findlay Commons dining is still the primary option and sits within the East Halls complex. The newer construction also means better soundproofing and more modern HVAC compared to even recently renovated older buildings.

Move-in day

Earle sits in the East Halls complex, 10 to 15 minutes on foot from central campus. Because it's newer construction, the hallways are wider and better laid out for move-in day traffic — carts move more freely here than in the tighter corridors of renovated older buildings. Arrival windows are still pre-assigned through the housing portal, so confirm your slot before you drive up.

Earle Hall FAQ

Does Earle Hall have private bathrooms?
Yes — this is Earle's defining feature and the main reason it's consistently the most requested hall in East Halls. Every room has its own private single-user bathroom, which is rare at Penn State and nearly unique in the East Halls complex. No scheduling around hallmates, no flip-flops required for the shower, no waiting for a sink at 8 a.m. For families where bathroom privacy matters, this detail alone separates Earle from every other East Halls building. McKean and Pennypacker also have private bathrooms, but Earle additionally offers full lofting.
Can my student bring a mini-fridge to Earle Hall?
No. Penn State's policy prohibits personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves in all residence halls, including Earle — there's no exception for newer or more premium buildings. The only approved path to in-room refrigeration or microwave access is the campus MicroFridge rental program, which provides a single combined unit that's delivered before move-in and retrieved at checkout. This is a university-wide rule that applies to every hall, regardless of amenities. Reserve the MicroFridge early; slots fill before fall move-in each year.
Can I fully loft the bed in Earle Hall?
Yes — Earle is one of only two East Halls buildings (along with Martin Hall) where full lofting is permitted and practical. The building was constructed in 2017 with ceiling heights specifically engineered to accommodate it. In most East Halls buildings, ceilings run under 7'6", which doesn't leave enough headroom to sit upright in a fully raised bed. Earle's ceiling clearance solves that. If a full loft is a priority for your student, Earle and Martin Hall are your two realistic options anywhere in East Halls.
How competitive is it to get assigned to Earle Hall?
Earle is consistently one of the most-requested East Halls buildings because of two rare features: private single-user bathrooms and full-loft ceiling height. Assignment for incoming freshmen is part of Penn State's housing lottery and preference process — freshmen don't directly choose their hall, but they can indicate building preferences. There's no guarantee, but stating Earle as a top preference is worth doing. Students who don't get Earle and want private bathrooms should also list McKean and Pennypacker; those who want full lofting should also list Martin.
