Living in Geary Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Geary was renovated in Phase 2A and reopened in 2020, putting it in the middle of the East Halls renovation timeline — newer than the 2019 buildings, older than the 2023 batch. Standard doubles run ~190 square feet, which is the East Halls baseline: two people, two desks, two dressers, two beds, and a corridor between them that you learn to navigate sideways with a laundry basket. Ceiling height is under 7'6", so raised frames are the move rather than full lofts.
Day to day
Bathrooms are community-style on each floor. The 2020 renovation means fixtures and finishes are reasonably current without being brand new. Findlay Commons is the dining hall for the East Halls complex and is close enough that most students walk over without planning around it — it functions more like a cafeteria downstairs than a separate destination. Floor lounges give residents space to work or decompress outside their rooms.
Move-in day
Geary is part of the East Halls cluster, roughly 10 to 15 minutes from Old Main and the HUB-Robeson Center on foot. The walk is flat and manageable once your student knows the route, but it's worth walking it once during orientation so it doesn't feel long on the first day of class. Move-in arrival windows are pre-assigned — check the housing portal and don't show up outside your window expecting smooth access.
Geary Hall FAQ
- Does Geary Hall have air conditioning?
- Yes. All East Halls buildings — including Geary — have central air conditioning following the East Halls Renovation program completed in 2024. Geary's own Phase 2A renovation in 2020 already updated the HVAC, and the broader complex-wide rollout ensured consistent cooling across every building. You don't need to pack a window unit, and personal AC equipment is explicitly prohibited under Penn State's housing policy. The system is reliable through August move-in and the warm early weeks of the semester.
- Can I bring my own mini-fridge to Geary Hall?
- No — and this is the policy that catches the most families off guard at Penn State. Personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves are prohibited in all residence halls, Geary included. The only approved way to have a fridge or microwave in the room is through Penn State's campus MicroFridge rental program, which provides a single combined unit delivered before move-in and removed at checkout. Reserve it in advance through the housing portal; availability is limited. Bringing your own is a fineable offense subject to confiscation.
- When was Geary Hall last renovated, and what does that mean practically?
- Geary reopened in fall 2020 after its Phase 2A renovation, making the finishes about five years old going into fall 2026. Bathrooms, flooring, lighting, and common areas are updated but not as fresh as the 2023 completions like Curtin or Packer. In practice, Geary is a comfortable and well-maintained building — not brand new, but meaningfully ahead of any unrenovated East Halls stock. Students who prioritize newer interiors might target the 2023–2024 buildings, but Geary holds up well day to day.
- What should we bring that the room doesn't include?
- Geary provides the bed frame, XL twin mattress, desk, chair, dresser, closet, window blinds, overhead light, ethernet port, and trash and recycling bins — but nothing soft, nothing personal, and nothing electrical beyond basic wiring. Your packing list should include: XL twin bedding and pillows, towels, a desk lamp, a surge protector, a shower caddy, flip-flops for the community bathroom, and ideally an area rug to warm up the hard floor. A full-length mirror is also commonly missed — there isn't one in the room.
