Living in Stangel Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Stangel rooms carry the same built-in, fixed-furniture design used across Texas Tech's traditional halls: a 39in x 80in twin XL pull-out bed with 77in bolsters and a shelf, three built-in under-bed drawers with 12in of height, a wall-mounted bookcase over a desk 41in wide by 35in deep, a chest of drawers, and a closet 43in wide by 31in deep with 80in of interior height, along with an in-room sink and medicine cabinet with mirror. Floor space is about 14 by 10 feet, the ceiling is 8ft, and the windows open only about 8 to 12 inches. Texas Tech's own hall page notes the Stangel/Murdough floor layout is unique to the complex, but the rooms themselves are similar to Hulen, Clement, Wall, Gates, Chitwood, Weymouth, and Coleman — with the caveat that Hulen, Clement, Wall, and Gates use standard-length twin beds rather than Stangel's extra-long.

Day to day

Bathrooms are community-style — Texas Tech's Residence Hall Selection Guide lists Stangel under "Traditional Halls (Community Bathrooms)." Residents have access to a TV lounge, a piano lounge, and study lounges on the second and fourth floors, plus free limitless laundry lounges. The Market dining location sits between Stangel and Murdough, and the complex includes two sand volleyball courts just south of the buildings. Stangel is coed by wing rather than by floor.

Move-in day

Stangel follows Texas Tech's universal Tech-In schedule; Fall 2026 arrivals run August 20-23 with a pre-selected arrival timeslot. The hall is on the central western edge of campus near the Media and Communication and Physics buildings, directly connected to Murdough Hall. Since the furniture is already built in, move-in centers on linens, a compliant mini fridge/microwave, and personal storage rather than furniture setup.

  • Sleep mask + earplugs

Turns a blank wall into a movie night — a floor favorite
  • Waterproof outdoor blanket
For quad hangs, tailgates, and games on damp grass
  • Essential-oil diffuser

The cheapest way to meet your whole floor in week one

Stangel Hall FAQ

Is Stangel Hall a freshman dorm?
It's one of Texas Tech's large traditional double-occupancy halls in the Stangel/Murdough Complex and houses substantial numbers of first-year students, but TTU's page does not attach a freshman-only restriction to it the way the Chitwood First Year Success community is restricted.
Can beds in Stangel be lofted?
No. The beds are fixed, built-in pull-out units — the height cannot be raised or reconfigured, unlike the movable-furniture halls (Bledsoe, Sneed, Horn, Knapp). Under-bed space is three built-in drawers with 12in of height, not open clearance.
How far is Stangel from Murdough?
They're directly connected as one complex — Stangel and Murdough share The Market dining location between them, plus two sand volleyball courts just south of the buildings.
