Living in Murdough Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Murdough uses the same fixed, built-in furniture design as Texas Tech's other traditional halls: a 39in x 80in twin XL pull-out bed with 77in bolsters and a shelf, three built-in under-bed drawers with 12in of height, a bookcase built in above a desk 41in wide by 35in deep, a chest of drawers, and a closet 43in wide by 31in deep with 80in of interior height, plus an in-room sink and medicine cabinet with mirror. Floor space is about 14 by 10 feet under an 8ft ceiling, and the windows open only about 8 to 12 inches. Nothing is movable or height-adjustable, so what's installed at check-in is what stays for the year. The hall is coed by wing rather than by floor.

Day to day

Bathrooms in Murdough are community-style — Texas Tech's Residence Hall Selection Guide lists it under "Traditional Halls (Community Bathrooms)." Residents get a TV lounge, a piano lounge, and study lounges on the second and fourth floors, plus free limitless laundry. The Market, a dining location between Stangel and Murdough, is the closest food option, and the complex has two sand volleyball courts on its south side. Murdough houses four learning communities — Pre-Health, Davis College, Media and Communication, and PreLaw — giving it a more major-specific social mix than the First Year Success halls at Chitwood and Weymouth.

Move-in day

Murdough follows Texas Tech's universal Tech-In schedule; Fall 2026 arrivals run August 20-23 with a pre-selected timeslot. The hall sits on the central western edge of campus near Agriculture row, Biology, and the Experimental Science buildings, close to the Media and Communication and Physics buildings, and is directly connected to Stangel Hall. With fixed furniture already in place, move-in focuses on linens, storage, and a compliant mini fridge/microwave rather than furniture assembly.

Comfort & Room

  • Gym bag / duffel (with shoe pocket)

  • Sleep mask + earplugs

Turns a blank wall into a movie night — a floor favorite
  • Waterproof outdoor blanket
For quad hangs, tailgates, and games on damp grass
  • Essential-oil diffuser
