What to bring to Texas Tech Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Texas Techfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Concealed handgun carry is permitted only for license holders in individually assigned rooms in the suite- and apartment-style halls — Carpenter/Wells, Murray, Talkington, and West Village Residence Hall B; Texas Tech's policy states that all other residence halls, including every traditional first-year hall, are exclusionary zones where concealed carry is prohibited by law.

⚠ Extension cords are banned outright in the residence halls — only UL-approved surge protectors are allowed, and they may not be piggybacked onto each other.

⚠ Students who don't complete a housing contract or an approved off-campus exemption are placed in Non-Compliance Status and charged for all applicable Housing and Dining Plan fees anyway; exemption requests must be submitted before the official move-in date and are never reviewed after a student has moved in.

Common questions about Texas Tech University dorms

Do freshmen have to live on campus at Texas Tech?

Yes. Texas Tech's official policy states the university "requires enrolled first-year students to live in the university residence halls," and OP 30.25 applies it to Lubbock-campus students enrolled in more than six hours for fall or spring, or three hours per summer session. Exemptions exist — the commuter category covers a student living in the established primary residence of a parent or legal guardian within Lubbock County, where both have lived for at least six months before the request. Other categories include financial hardship, medical hardship through Student Disability Services, military service, being 21 or older, marriage or dependent children, and 30 or more semester hours earned after high school. Every request must be submitted and approved before the official move-in date; TTU will not review one after a student has moved in.

What size are the beds in Texas Tech dorms?

It depends on the hall, and getting this wrong is the most expensive packing mistake at Tech. Stangel, Murdough, Chitwood, Coleman, and Weymouth have 39in x 80in twin extra-long beds built into the wall furniture as pull-out units that cannot be raised, lofted, or bunked. But Texas Tech's own furnishings data lists Clement, Gates, Hulen, and Wall as "Twin Pull-Out Beds (Standard - NOT Extra Long)" — Clement's is 39in x 76in. The movable-furniture halls (Bledsoe, Sneed, Horn, Knapp) have twin XL frames that are bunkable or adjustable. Check your assigned hall on TTU's Room Dimensions and Furnishings page before buying sheets.

Can I bring a mini fridge and microwave?

Yes, within limits: refrigerators must be 3.7 cubic feet or smaller and microwaves 1500 watts or less, unless University Student Housing has already provided one in that room. Anything larger is on the prohibited items list, along with portable air conditioners, dishwashers, washers, dryers, and ovens.

Are Texas Tech dorms air conditioned?

Yes. The official Residence Hall Selection Guide itemizes air conditioning under "All of our halls include the following," alongside smoke-free facilities, wireless internet, and free limitless laundry. Portable air conditioning units are separately prohibited, since the buildings are already cooled.

When is Fall 2026 move-in at Texas Tech?

Tech-In, Texas Tech's official residence hall arrival process, runs August 20-23, 2026, with approved early groups arriving August 14. Every student must select a personal Tech-In arrival timeslot through the housing portal; the deadline to secure one was July 26, and TTU warns that missing it may result in forfeiting the housing assignment.
