Common questions about UT Austin dorms
- What size bed does UT Austin use?
- All UT residence halls use XL Twin beds (38"×80"). Standard twin sheets won't fit — buy bedding labeled "Twin XL" or "Extra-Long Twin" specifically.
- Do UT Austin dorms have air conditioning?
- Yes — all 10 freshman halls have central AC. This is non-negotiable in Austin where move-in temperatures regularly hit 100°F. Personal AC units are still prohibited, but you won't need one.
- Can I bring a mini-fridge or microwave to UT Austin?
- No. UT provides a MicroFridge combo unit (microwave + mini-fridge in one) in every single room. Personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves are both prohibited. The provided unit is yours to use for the year.
- Can I bring string lights or LED lights to UT Austin?
- No. String lights, rope lights, and holiday lights are prohibited by UT fire code — including LED versions. This catches a lot of students off guard. Skip them entirely.
- When does UT Austin move-in start?
- Early check-in runs August 19–22, 2026 (extra $100/day charge). Standard move-in is August 23–24 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, 7 a.m.–6 p.m. Classes begin August 26.
