Living in Hopkins: what to know before you pack

The room

Hopkins rooms are listed as doubles and singles, with triple floor plans also published. Each is furnished with steel-construction furniture with solid-wood drawer fronts: a desk and chair, a three-drawer chest whose top drawer can be padlocked, a closet typically 3' x 3', a wall-mounted bookcase, and a bed. Housing's published default configuration puts both beds at mid-loft height — 38" from the top of the mattress to the floor, with 28" of clearance beneath the frame. Housing does not publish alternate loft heights or an adjustment increment for Hopkins, so confirm any specific configuration with Residence Life. Mattresses are extra-long twin. As with other Ikenberry halls, everything besides the built-in furniture and internet — bedding, a fridge, a microwave, a lamp — is bring-your-own.

Day to day

Bathrooms in Hopkins are community-style, shared by the floor. The hall bills itself as the quintessential first-year residence hall experience: a friendly, social community whose programming focuses on building a foundation for the first year, rather than a Living-Learning Community hall. In-hall amenities include laundry, a community kitchen, a library, a computer lab, a fitness room, music practice rooms, and a learning commons, with the SDRP dining building a short walk away along with the Ikenberry Dining Center, 57 North, and the Caffeinator café. Hopkins is across the street from the turf soccer fields, the Marching Illini practice field, the ARC, and Memorial Stadium.

Move-in day

Hopkins follows the general New Resident Move-In schedule of August 19-20, 2026, with residents selecting an arrival time slot through the housing portal ahead of check-in. Because Hopkins hosts no Living-Learning Communities, it does not carry the August 18 early-arrival date that LLC halls like Weston use. Expect scheduled check-in windows and elevator queues during peak hours.

Comfort & Room

(18)
  • Gym bag / duffel (with shoe pocket)

  • Sleep mask + earplugs

  • Mini projector (movie nights)
Turns a blank wall into a movie night — a floor favorite
  • Waterproof outdoor blanket
For quad hangs, tailgates, and games on damp grass
  • Essential-oil diffuser

  • Safety box opener
Ceramic auto-retract blade opens the mountain of move-in boxes without slicing what's inside — safe and dorm-allowed
  • UNO / card games
The cheapest way to meet your whole floor in week one

Move-In Day Gear
