EIU requires all students to live in university residence halls for their first two years after high school graduation — space permitting — a requirement that also reaches transfer students under 20 with fewer than 48 post-secondary credit hours. Exemptions exist for married students, students who've turned 21, documented medical necessity, or those living with a parent or legal guardian within 50 miles. All four halls covered here sit on or near the South Quad, run community-style bathrooms, and list air conditioning on their own pages. Fall 2026 move-in runs Thursday, August 20 through Sunday, August 23.

⚠ Tampering with a smoke detector — including covering it — carries a minimum $100 fine and University Disciplinary Probation on the first offense.
