Western Illinois University Freshman Dorms 2026

Western Illinois University requires all freshmen and sophomores (under 60 credit hours) to live in a university residence hall, with exemptions for age 21+, marriage/dependent child, 1+ year active military, 4+ semesters of prior on-campus residency, living with a parent/guardian within 40 miles, or a documented medical/dietary need. WIU's housing has shrunk sharply: Caroline Grote and Corbin-Olson are explicitly upper-division only (sophomores and above), Lincoln-Washington has sat paused since Fall 2025 for structural repairs with no reopening date announced, and Tanner Hall has been offline for years — leaving Thompson Hall as the only current first-year residence hall. Thompson's own dimensions sheet gives explicit lofting rules (loft must clear 60 inches and any light fixtures), and campus-wide, cinder blocks are banned for raising beds while bed risers are allowed, with 9 inches of stock clearance under every bed. Fall 2026 move-in is Thursday, August 20 at 8 a.m.
