Northern Illinois University Freshman Dorms 2026
First-year students at NIU who don't qualify for an exemption are required to live in a residence hall for a full academic year (August-May). Rooms in Gilbert, Grant, Neptune and Stevenson come with a bed, mattress, dresser or closet, desk, desk chair, a MicroFridge (combined mini-fridge/microwave/freezer) and drapes or blinds; Patterson minisuites get a minifridge instead, with microwaves in the shared cluster. Beds are set at Junior Loft height by default, with a Low Loft option; high lofts are no longer offered anywhere on campus. New first-year students move in August 19-20, 2026.

What to bring to Northern Illinois Universitydorms — and what’s already there
Every NIUfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.
⚠ The live-on rule applies only to single freshmen with fewer than 24 accepted college credit hours who enroll directly after high school, have not reached their 21st birthday by Sept. 1, and are not living with a parent or legal guardian within 50 miles of the DeKalb campus, per NIU's University Residency Requirement page.
⚠ Tampering with a smoke detector carries a minimum $350 fine plus restitution, and a fire caused by unattended cooking can lead to removal from university housing, per the NIU Housing Handbook.
⚠ Trailers and U-Hauls are not permitted during move-in due to limited space around the halls; pack into one vehicle (two maximum), per NIU's Move-In Guide.
⚠ NIU's two pages disagree on the loft-request deadline: the Beds and Lofts page says requests must be received by Aug. 6 to be set up before fall move-in, while the Move-In FAQ says requests made before Aug. 1 will be ready on arrival. Submit by Aug. 1 to be safe; late requests are honored but may not be completed until after classes begin.
⚠ Air conditioning is not universal: Gilbert, Grant, Patterson and Stevenson are air-conditioned, but only Neptune East is.

Common questions about Northern Illinois University dorms
- What size are the beds at NIU?
- All halls use Twin XL-fit beds, but the exact mattress dimensions differ by hall: Grant and Neptune are 78in x 36in x 7.5in, Patterson is 78in x 36in x 8in, and Stevenson is 80in x 36in x 6.5in. Beds are set at Junior Loft height by default with a Low Loft option available on request; high lofts are no longer offered in any hall.
- Are freshmen required to live on campus at NIU?
- Yes. Single students classified as freshmen (fewer than 24 accepted college credit hours, enrolling directly after high school) who haven't reached their 21st birthday by Sept. 1 and aren't residing with a parent or legal guardian within 50 miles of the DeKalb campus must live in an NIU residence hall for a full academic year (August-May), as long as space is available. Students who are required to live on campus and don't sign up are automatically charged for a double room.
- Does NIU provide a fridge and microwave?
- In Gilbert, Grant, Neptune and Stevenson, every furnished room includes a MicroFridge combining a mini-fridge, microwave and freezer compartment. Patterson minisuites get a minifridge (fridge and freezer only); each Patterson cluster has two microwaves in its shared common area instead. Either way, students may not bring an additional fridge or microwave.
- What can't I bring to my NIU dorm room?
- Prohibited items include space heaters, hot plates and most cooking appliances, candles and incense burners, personal air conditioning units, personal routers, weapons, fireworks, hoverboards, and pets other than fish. NIU's online packing tool lists the full, searchable item-by-item policy.
- When is fall move-in at NIU?
- New students move in Wednesday, August 19 and Thursday, August 20, 2026, by scheduled appointment through the MyHousing portal. Returning students move in Saturday, August 22 through Sunday, August 23. NIU does not offer an early-arrival option.
