Living in Neptune Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Neptune bedrooms run about 15' by 11'8" with 7'10.5" ceilings -- among the more spacious first-year rooms on campus -- furnished with a Twin XL bed, a closet with overhead storage and a cubby organizer, a desk with a locking drawer and three shelves above it, a rolling chair, and an in-room MicroFridge. Neptune West and East have updated furniture and luxury vinyl plank flooring. Beds are set at Junior Loft height, 34in from the floor, with a Low Loft option at 16in; NIU lists those loft options for Neptune East and West, so confirm availability with Housing if you're assigned to Neptune North. High lofts are not offered anywhere at NIU. Every room includes overhead lighting and an Ethernet port, and windows come with drapes pre-installed so there's nothing extra to hang on day one.

Day to day

Neptune is centrally located next to the Holmes Student Center and the Huskie Bus turnaround, and includes music practice rooms, an art/drafting room, and the popular Fireplace Lounge alongside 24-hour computer labs and laundry in Neptune Central. The hall's biggest quirk is its climate control: only the East wing is air-conditioned, while North and West residents rely on windows and fans through warm-weather stretches. All You Care to Eat dining is in-hall at Neptune's food court, and residents share privacy-enhanced restrooms down the hall -- curtained single-person shower stalls with private changing areas -- rather than in-room bathrooms. Neptune also hosts the Fine Arts House and LGBTQ+ Community, and Neptune West is the one part of the building that stays open over winter break under a separate contract.

Move-in day

New Neptune residents move in August 19-20, 2026 alongside the rest of NIU's incoming class, by half-hour appointment through MyHousing. Families should plan for one vehicle per student (two maximum) since trailers and U-Hauls can't access the unloading zones. If your assignment lands in North or West, pack a fan -- those wings have no built-in air conditioning, and personal AC units aren't allowed. Bring your NIU OneCard or a photo ID to check in and collect your room key, and expect move-in volunteers on August 19 to help carry items from the unloading zone. Worth noting: in Neptune you'll use a key rather than your OneCard to reach your floor and room.
