What to bring to Illinois State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Illinois Statefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ All residence halls are air conditioned, but campus-wide cooling runs only from mid-August through mid-September and is off the rest of the year unless a medical accommodation is approved through Student Access and Accommodation Services. Cardinal Court apartments are the exception, with year-round resident-controlled thermostats.

⚠ Housing bans all electrical appliances except hair tools, mirrors, shavers, irons, and single-serve coffee makers like Keurigs. Personal microwaves, standard coffee makers, toasters, hot plates, and air fryers are prohibited, carry a $50 fine for a first violation and $100 after that, and may be removed from the room.

⚠ Knives with blades longer than three inches, weapon look-alikes such as Nerf or Orbeez guns, and any item classified as a weapon under Illinois law are prohibited in all University Housing properties and handled under the university's Prohibited Weapons Policy.

⚠ Cancelling a fall housing contract between August 4 and September 4 costs $250 plus 50% of remaining room charges, rising to $250 plus 100% of room charges from the first possible day of occupancy after September 4.

⚠ Irons may be used only in a floor or suite utility room. Iron use inside student rooms is prohibited.

What size bed is in Illinois State dorms?

All residence hall rooms use an extra-long twin mattress that Housing lists as 3' x 6'8" (36 x 80 inches) on a frame that adjusts to seven heights between 10 and 33 inches with no kit, or rises to a traditional loft between 45.5 and 68 inches with a loft kit provided by the university on request.

Are freshmen required to live on campus at Illinois State?

Yes. Illinois State requires students to live in University Housing during their first two years out of high school, for the fall and spring semesters; exemptions are reviewed case by case.

Can I bring a microwave or fridge to my dorm?

No personal microwaves — a shared one is already provided on every student living floor, and every two suites in Watterson. A personal fridge is allowed if it does not exceed 4.5 cubic feet, is no taller than 36 inches, and draws no more than 1.5 running amps.

Do Illinois State dorms have air conditioning?
