Living in Manchester Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Manchester shares its room layouts and dimensions with neighboring Hewett: a double runs about 142 square feet with two bunkable XL twin mattresses (36 x 80 in, listed by Housing as 3' x 6'8"), two desks and chairs, two dressers, two closets, and a window/HVAC unit. Single, double suite, and quad options are also available -- a quad is about 333 square feet with four bunkable XL twins -- so exact square footage varies with room type. Beds adjust to seven heights (10 to 33 inches) without a kit, and a loft kit requested from the university raises a bed to a traditional loft height between 45.5 and 68 inches. All furniture is university-owned, movable within the room, and can't be stacked or disassembled.
Day to day
Manchester is an 18-story tower paired with Hewett, about half a mile from the Bone Student Center and a block from Uptown Normal. Its Themed Living-Learning Community floors include Honors, Fine Arts, Music, Global Perspectives, Leadership, Teacher Education, the Rainbow Floor, and the Big Red Marching Machine floor for band members. Bathrooms are shared by floor rather than by room, with male, female, and all-gender options that shift year to year; for 2026-2027 Manchester's all-gender bathrooms are on floors 5, 8, 13, and 15. Laundry sits in the lower level and is included in the room rate, and a community microwave is available on every living floor. Personal microwaves and standard coffee makers aren't allowed in rooms, since Housing permits only single-serve makers like Keurigs and already provides a floor microwave.
Move-in day
Fall 2026 move-in at Manchester followed the same campus-wide schedule as the rest of Illinois State, Tuesday, August 11 through Saturday, August 15, with appointment times self-selected through the Housing & Dining Portal. Because Manchester sits in the same Uptown Normal-adjacent location as Hewett, families should expect the same tight street parking during peak unload hours and plan for an early or late slot if flexibility allows. The tower is 18 stories with three elevators, so a cart or dolly speeds up the trip from the car, and tools plus a rubber mallet are worth packing if a loft kit was reserved ahead of time, since Housing provides kits on request and they are built on-site rather than pre-installed.
