The room

A Hewett double is about 142 square feet with two bunkable XL twin mattresses (36 x 80 in, listed by Housing as 3' x 6'8"), two desks and chairs, two dressers, two closets, and a window/HVAC unit. Hewett also has single, double suite, and quad layouts, so exact square footage shifts with room type -- a quad runs about 333 square feet, and a double suite gives each of two bedrooms about 142 square feet plus a shared private lounge. Like every residence hall on campus, beds adjust to seven heights (10 to 33 inches) without extra parts, or a resident can request a loft kit from the university to reach a traditional loft between 45.5 and 68 inches. Furniture is university-owned and movable but can't be disassembled or stacked on top of other pieces.

Hewett is an 18-story tower connected to Manchester, roughly half a mile from the Bone Student Center and one block from Uptown Normal's shops and restaurants. The building is built around Themed Living-Learning Communities -- floors grouped by shared interest, including Academic and Career Exploration, Business, Co-Sciences, Health & Wellness, Information Technology, Mathematics, Mennonite College of Nursing, Social Work, Special Education, and the Sophomore Experience. Bathrooms are shared by floor, with male, female, and all-gender options; for 2026-2027 Hewett's all-gender bathrooms are on floors 4, 14, 16, and 17. A shared kitchen in the Hewett lobby can be reserved through the front desk, laundry is in the lower level and included in the room rate, and a community microwave is provided on every living floor. There is no dining center in the building itself.

Move-in day

Fall 2026 move-in at Hewett ran the same campus-wide window, Tuesday, August 11 through Saturday, August 15, with new students choosing their appointment slot through the Housing & Dining Portal after their room assignment was confirmed by email. Hewett's Uptown Normal location means street parking near the building fills up fast during peak move-in hours, so an early or late appointment slot in the window can mean an easier unload. Hewett is 18 stories with three elevators, so a cart or two-wheel dolly and basic tools (hammer, screwdriver, rubber mallet) make the process faster, especially if a loft kit was requested and needs to be assembled on-site.
