- Can I loft or bunk my bed at SIU Carbondale?
- Yes, school-wide. East Campus towers (Mae Smith, Neely, Schneider) have beds sitting low by default, and residents check out a free lofting/bunking kit from Housekeeping. West Campus (Thompson Point) halls like Baldwin and Steagall arrive already lofted before move-in.
- What size rug or carpet can I bring?
- It depends on your hall. Mae Smith, Neely, and Schneider (East Campus towers) cap out around 9'8" x 14'6". Thompson Point doubles allow up to 17'8" x 9'5", with more room in triples.
- Why does SIU require freshmen to live on campus?
- SIU's official rationale is that on-campus housing improves academic performance and campus involvement for first-year students. Exemptions exist for students 21+, veterans with 1+ year active duty, married students, part-time students in good standing (by petition), and students commuting from a parent/guardian/grandparent/adult sibling within 45 miles (Housing Policy Verification form required).
