What to bring to University of Illinois Urbana-Champaigndorms — and what’s already there

Every Illinoisfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Smoke detectors may not be covered, disconnected, or removed; tampering results in a $250 charge per occurrence plus a referral to student conduct.

⚠ All first-time attending undergraduates must live in university-certified housing for the entire academic year. The two automatic exemptions are reaching age 21 by August 15 of the first term registered, or electing eight or fewer credit hours in a regular semester; other exemptions (living with a parent/guardian within 40 miles, marriage/domestic partnership, two or more semesters of residence hall experience at another college) require an approved waiver.

⚠ New residents who cancel a housing contract after May 15 face a cancellation fee of up to 75% of the room and meal plan rate — that is a share of the full contract, not of the unused remainder. Returning residents face up to 75% of the entire contract amount after the cancellation window following room selection.

What size mattress do Illinois residence hall beds use?

Beds use a twin extra-long mattress, 6" thick. Housing's move-in checklist recommends one or two sets of sheets measuring 36" x 80". Note that ISR (Townsend and Wardall) mattresses are specifically 35" w x 78" d x 6" h.

What's already in my room when I arrive?

Each room comes with a desk with drawers, a desk chair, a bed with an extra-long twin mattress, blinds, a locking closet, a wireless internet connection, a smoke detector, and a wastebasket.

Can I bring a fridge and microwave?

Yes — one small refrigerator per room, no more than 4.4 cubic feet and Energy Star certified, and one small microwave rated 800 watts or less per room.

What items are banned in the dorms?

University Housing's move-in checklist lists wireless hubs, 3D printers, Nerf guns, halogen lamps, cooking appliances with exposed heating elements, space heaters, personal mattresses, candles, alcohol, oversized speakers, vehicles, hoverboards, and extension cords among items that cannot be brought into the residence halls.

When do first-year students move in for Fall 2026?

New Resident Move-In Days are August 19-20, 2026. Living-Learning Community members move in August 18, early arrival runs August 16-18, additional move-in days are available August 22-23, and classes begin August 24.
