- UCR's own housing FAQ discloses that the first phase of Lothian (A, B & C wings) was built prior to 1980 and was constructed with asbestos-containing materials as well as materials containing lead; residents must not puncture or disturb ceiling, wall, or hard-surface floor material.
- Nothing may be hung from walls or ceilings anywhere in UCR housing (Policy 2.11.3 names hooks and other hanging devices) -- adhesive hanging strips are not an approved workaround.
Living in Lothian: what to know before you pack
The room
Lothian rooms are furnished with an extra-long twin bed, a desk and chair, a dresser and closet (or armoire), a microwave, a mini-refrigerator, utilities, and high-speed internet, per UCR Housing's official Room Amenities list; air conditioning and heating are confirmed for Lothian on UCR's amenities chart. Rooms are same-gender, and while the hall page labels the room type Double, the same page notes triple-occupancy is the most common arrangement in the residence halls. Lothian is the only UCR hall whose current rate calculator adds a Deluxe Triple to the Single/Double/Triple lineup. UCR's own page explains the wings were once known as East Lothian and West Lothian, "built at different times and with slightly different room layouts," so don't expect every wing to match. As in every UCR residence hall, lofting or altering bed height is prohibited -- staff-only adjustment after an approved medical request -- and open-element appliances such as hot plates, toasters, and non-UL space heaters are prohibited in the room.
Day to day
Lothian residents share community bath/shower facilities split by gender rather than private bathrooms -- Private Bath is marked Not Available for Lothian on UCR's amenities chart -- and the hall is home to 1,000+ residents per its official UCR page. Its Community Features list includes a computer lab, television and study lounges, a fitness center, elevators, Amazon Lockers, and an on-site residential restaurant. Laundry runs through the campus-wide WASH-Connect app at $1.75 to wash and $1.25 to dry. Only the first construction phase of Lothian -- the A, B & C wings -- predates 1980; UCR's own housing FAQ discloses that this phase was built with asbestos- and lead-containing materials and asks residents to avoid puncturing walls, ceilings, or hard-surface floors. UCR's conduct policy separately prohibits hanging anything from walls or ceilings anywhere in housing, so plan decor around your door rather than your walls.
Move-in day
UCR's official Fall 2026 Residence Halls Move-In window is September 19 & 20, 2026, with Lothian's exact date and check-in time announced by Housing Services beforehand and room assignment information distributed September 1. Lothian sits at 500 W Big Springs Road, next to the Lothian Residential Restaurant and near Glen Mor and Big Springs Parking on UCR's own campus map -- a genuinely different part of campus from Aberdeen-Inverness (100 Aberdeen Drive), Dundee (680 W Linden Street), and Pentland Hills (1 Pentland Way), so route to the right address rather than to a generic residence-hall drop-off. On-site parking is marked Not Available for Lothian on UCR's amenities chart, and UCR's FAQ states first-year residents are not allowed to bring a vehicle to campus at all, with only an appeal process through UCR Transportation.
