UC San Diego Freshman Dorms 2026

UC San Diego splits its incoming class across eight distinct residential colleges — Revelle, Muir, Sixth, Warren, and others — each with its own halls and dining, so which college you land in shapes your whole first year. Every room ships with a Twin XL (36"x80") bed, desk, and dresser but no air conditioning, since the campus relies on operable windows and the ocean breeze to stay cool. General move-in for Fall 2026 runs September 16-20 campus-wide, though the date you can view your assignment and pick a time slot is staggered by college (Sixth first on August 18, Marshall last on August 27). Incoming first-year and transfer students receive a two-year on-campus housing guarantee.

What to bring to UC San Diegodorms — and what’s already there

Every UCSDfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

None of UC San Diego's residence halls are air-conditioned by design, and Community Standards prohibit portable or installed air conditioning units outright — pack a fan for the few days temperatures top 75 degrees instead.

Alcohol delivery to single undergraduate housing is prohibited from any source for every resident regardless of age, and Community Standards state that one's presence during a violation 'condones, supports, and/or encourages' it — so being in the room can itself be a problem.

Burning food badly enough to set off the building fire alarm can leave the responsible resident financially liable for any associated costs, per Community Standards.

Not living on campus during the Fall or Winter quarter of your admit year automatically forfeits UC San Diego's two-year housing guarantee; to maintain it you must reside on campus for the entirety of your admit year and keep your contract for the full academic year.

EACH move-ins can select from additional move-in dates beyond the general window at $50 per day, assessed to your student statement unless covered by another department.

Common questions about UC San Diego dorms

What size are the beds in UC San Diego dorms?
Extra-long twin, 36" x 80", campus-wide. HDH's official FAQ, Warren College's move-in page, and Sixth College's residence-life page all independently confirm a Twin XL mattress — there is no documented per-college mattress exception. One caution: Sixth College's page lists a bed measuring 'approximately 38" wide and 83" long from the headboard to the foot board.' That is the FRAME, not the mattress; the same sentence states 'The mattress is a Twin XL (extra long).' Standard Twin XL bedding fits.
Do UCSD dorms have air conditioning?
No, and this is uniform across every undergraduate hall. Per HDH's own FAQ, "San Diego is a temperate climate, in support of sustainability efforts, our communities do not have air conditioning, so make sure to bring a fan for the few days our temperatures are over 75 degrees." Warren College's move-in page repeats the same line verbatim. Community Standards separately prohibit portable or installed AC units, so a fan is the only option.
Can I bring a mini fridge and microwave?
Yes. UC San Diego's Residential Life Community Standards state "Microwaves must be 750 watts or less and refrigerators must be 5.0 cubic feet or less." Appliances with exposed heating elements are prohibited, and heat-producing cooking appliances (toasters, electric grills, air fryers, water boilers, coffee makers, rice cookers) must be used in kitchen areas only. Coordinate with roommates so you don't bring duplicates.
What's the actual first-year move-in date for Fall 2026?
HDH's move-in page states: "General move-in is offered from Wednesday, September 16 - September 20 and also provides additional week zero (September 21 - 25) move-in." Two other dates on the same page are easy to confuse with it: the 2026-27 housing contract term begins Saturday, September 19, 2026, and the first day of classes is September 24. September 16-20 is the general move-in window; September 19 is a contract/billing date, not when you move in.
Does UC San Diego guarantee first-year housing?
Yes. Per HDH's official guarantee page, "The undergraduate incoming Fall and Winter class (first-year and transfer students) are eligible for a two-year housing guarantee." The same page states students "must reside in on-campus housing for Fall or Winter Quarter of their admit year or they will automatically forfeit their two-year housing guarantee," and must reside on campus for the entirety of the admit year to maintain it.
