Catalyst Dorm Checklist 2026

UC San Diego

Suite-style, predominantly double and triple rooms (~10'x10') with some singles; shared suite lounges and kitchenettes

Catalyst is one of four buildings — with Kaleidoscope, Tapestry, and Mosaic — that make up Sixth College's North Torrey Pines Living Learning Neighborhood, among the newest undergraduate housing at UC San Diego. HDH's neighborhoods page states "Most Sixth College first-year students live in predominantly double and triple rooms (with some singles) housed in 3 buildings" in the neighborhood, without naming which three. Note for bedding: Sixth's page lists a bed "approximately 38" wide and 83" long from the headboard to the foot board" — that is the frame; the same sentence confirms the mattress is a Twin XL.
  • Bed SizeTwin XL · 36"×80" (frame reads 38"×83")
  • Under-BedAdjustable: 13", 20", or 27" (3 notches)
  • ACNo

  • Like every UC San Diego hall, Catalyst has no air conditioning, and Community Standards prohibit portable or installed A/C units — bring a fan for the few days above 75 degrees.
  • Sixth College publishes a bed FRAME measurement of ~38"x83" that is easy to mistake for a mattress size. The mattress is a standard Twin XL (36"x80") — buy Twin XL sheets, not an oversized set.

Living in Catalyst: what to know before you pack

The room

Catalyst rooms average about 10 feet by 10 feet for doubles and triples, with singles running smaller, per Sixth College's own space guide. Each resident gets a bed, a desk officially measured at 42" wide x 30" high x 28" deep, and a dresser at 40" wide x 55" high x 22" deep. One number on Sixth's page trips people up: it describes the bed as "approximately 38" wide and 83" long from the headboard to the foot board." That is the frame's outer footprint, not the mattress — the very next clause reads "The mattress is a Twin XL (extra long)." So buy ordinary Twin XL (36"x80") bedding. For storage, the bed sits at one of three notch heights giving 13", 20", or 27" of clearance underneath, and Sixth publishes under-bed drawers measuring 37" wide x 8.5" high x 19" deep — measure your bins against the notch height you plan to use, not against the drawer.

Day to day

Catalyst is one of four buildings — alongside Kaleidoscope, Tapestry, and Mosaic — that make up Sixth College's North Torrey Pines Living Learning Neighborhood, among the newest undergraduate housing on campus. HDH's neighborhoods page notes that "Shared suite lounges and kitchenettes are available for studying and socializing" and that "Laundry facilities and mailroom are available in the neighborhood." Sixth's own neighborhood directory places the Sixth Market, Restaurants at Sixth, a Craft Center, and the Residence Life Office all within the neighborhood, with Scholars Parking Structure as the closest garage. Sixth's pages describe both suite-style and apartment-style configurations across the four buildings, so incoming first-years should confirm which layout their specific assignment falls into before move-in day.

Move-in day

Sixth College gets the earliest room-assignment access date of any UC San Diego housing community — August 18, 2026 — letting Sixth students view their assignment and pick a move-in time slot before any other neighborhood opens up. General move-in for Fall 2026 runs September 16-20, with the week zero window September 21-25 for later arrivals. Sixth College Residence Life can be reached at 858.822.5268 for building-specific questions. On bedding: order Twin XL — the 38"x83" number on Sixth's own page is the bed frame, and Sixth explicitly states the mattress is a Twin XL.

Catalyst FAQ

Is the bed in Catalyst a standard Twin XL?
Yes. Sixth College's own page states plainly, "The mattress is a Twin XL (extra long)." The ~38" x 83" figure on the same page is the bed frame measured from headboard to footboard, not the mattress — standard Twin XL (36"x80") sheets fit.
How big are the rooms in Catalyst?
Sixth College's official space guide puts doubles and triples at roughly 10 feet by 10 feet on average, with singles running smaller and sizes varying throughout the community.
