San Diego State University Freshman Dorms 2026
SDSU requires non-local first-year students to live on campus (and hold a meal plan) for their first two years, while local students can join an interest list but aren't guaranteed a space. All first-year halls are traditional-style with communal bathrooms, Twin XL beds, and air conditioning, and most incoming students land in a triple-occupancy room. Fall 2026 move-in runs August 19–21, with students assigned one specific day.

⚠ Tampering with a fire alarm or smoke detector can be prosecuted as a felony under California Penal Code 148.4(a)(1), plus repair costs and possible eviction.
⚠ Bed height changes require a paid Housing Portal service request ($50 to raise, $100 to loft), are only offered in single and double room types, and are not performed until after the first two weeks of move-in.

- What size bed do SDSU first-year dorms use?
- Twin XL, confirmed on each first-year hall's official page. SDSU does not publish inch dimensions, and Housing still advises waiting for your building assignment before buying sheets, since sizing can vary in other (non-first-year) buildings.
- Are freshmen required to live on campus at SDSU?
- Only non-local first-year students (from outside San Diego and Imperial counties) are required to live on campus, for two years, with a meal plan. Local students can request housing but aren't guaranteed a spot. In practice about 70% of first-time, first-year students lived in campus housing in fall 2024.
- Can I bring my own mini-fridge or microwave?
- No. SDSU installs a combination microwave-refrigerator unit in every first-year room, and personal refrigerators of any size are prohibited campus-wide.
- Do SDSU's first-year residence halls have air conditioning?
- Yes — Huāxyacac, Chapultepec, Tenochca, and Zura all list air conditioning among their in-room amenities. Note that section 27 of the housing license agreement does not guarantee cooling.
- When is Fall 2026 move-in at SDSU?
- Move-in runs Wednesday, August 19 through Friday, August 21, 2026. Each student is assigned one specific day and check-in window by email in early July and must stick to it. New Student and Family Convocation follows Saturday, August 22 at Viejas Arena.
