UC Santa Barbara Freshman Dorms 2026

UC Santa Barbara houses most incoming freshmen in one of seven residence halls — Anacapa, Manzanita Village, San Miguel, San Nicolas, San Rafael, Santa Catalina and Santa Cruz — several of them steps from the Pacific. Every residence hall room ships with a Twin XL (39-by-80-inch) bed, desk, chair, dresser, mirror, towel bar, wastebasket and drapes, but there's no air conditioning: UCSB's residence hall policy (Section 15, Heating and Air Conditioning) prohibits personal AC units and space heaters outright, so a fan matters more than a mini-cooler. Fall 2026 move-in runs September 18-20, with available days and times set per building and selected through the assignment email UCSB sends in mid-August. UCSB runs on the quarter system rather than semesters.

What to bring to UC Santa Barbaradorms — and what’s already there

Every UCSBfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

Personal air conditioning units and space heaters are prohibited under residence hall policy Section 15 (Heating and Air Conditioning), and UCSB's own lodging pages state that bedrooms are not equipped with air conditioning.

No cooking appliances of any kind — including microwaves, hot plates, toasters and rice cookers — may be kept in a student room, by order of the UCSB Fire Marshal. UCSB provides microwave ovens in the hall kitchenettes instead, and each hall front desk lends pots and pans against your Access ID card.

Refrigerators are capped at 4.5 cubic feet.

Move-in falls between September 18 and 20, 2026, with available days and times set per building; your unloading voucher must be printed, is valid only 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on your move-in day, and no return trips are allowed.

Bunk beds and lofts must stay in a position and at a height approved by Housing staff — UCSB does not publish under-bed clearance figures for any hall, so measure on arrival before buying storage bins.

Common questions about UC Santa Barbara dorms

What size are the beds in UCSB residence halls?
Twin XL (39" x 80"), stated on UCSB Campus Housing's own FAQ. The move-in packing list phrases it as "sheets and mattress cover (beds are extra-large twin size)."
Can I bring a microwave or mini-fridge?
No microwaves or other cooking appliances are allowed in individual rooms — UCSB provides microwave ovens in the hall kitchenettes instead, and each front desk lends pots and pans. Refrigerators are fine up to 4.5 cubic feet; MicroFridge is UCSB's preferred rental vendor.
Is on-campus housing guaranteed for first-year students?
UCSB's housing site does not publish a freshman guarantee — the only guarantee stated on housing.ucsb.edu covers transfers ("New transfer students are guaranteed housing in UCSB apartments for their first year"). In July 2026, UCSB Housing announced on its own social channels that first-years and new transfers starting Fall 2026 would get a two-year guarantee, and the Daily Nexus and Santa Barbara News-Press both reported it, but as of August 17, 2026 that change had not appeared on any housing.ucsb.edu page. Confirm your own guarantee terms directly with Campus Housing (805-893-4371, housinginfo@housing.ucsb.edu).
Are the dorms air conditioned?
No. UCSB residence hall policy Section 15 prohibits personal air conditioning units and space heaters, and UCSB's own lodging pages state that "Bedrooms are not equipped with air conditioning." No residence hall lists air conditioning among its published amenities. Bring a fan.
When does Fall 2026 move-in happen?
Between September 18 and September 20, 2026. Each building has its own permitted dates and times, and you select your slot through the link in the assignment email UCSB sends in mid-August.
