UC Irvine Freshman Dorms 2026
UC Irvine funnels almost every incoming freshman into one of two large hall communities, Mesa Court or Middle Earth, where every room uses a Twin XL mattress on a bunkable/loftable frame and neither community has any building air conditioning — UCI's own What to Bring list suggests packing a fan. Fall 2026 move-in for both communities is September 19-20, with UCI emailing your housing assignment in early September along with sign-up instructions for a 30-minute arrival window. Freshmen who submit their Statement of Intent to Register by May 1 and complete the housing application by May 15 are eligible for two years of on-campus housing.

What to bring to UC Irvinedorms — and what’s already there
Every Irvinefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.
⚠ Neither Mesa Court nor Middle Earth has air conditioning — housing.uci.edu states "No air conditioning available" for both the classic halls and the towers. UCI does not prohibit personal fans; its own What to Bring list suggests a fan as an item to consider.
⚠ Tampering with or blocking a smoke detector, fire door, sprinkler (18 in clearance required) or extinguisher (36 in clearance required) violates university regulations and Federal and State law; UCI states violators are "subject to damage charges, civil prosecution, and serious disciplinary action."
⚠ Only micro-fridge combo units are allowed as in-room microwaves; a standalone microwave or any other electrical cooking appliance found in a bedroom is a policy violation — those belong in the hall kitchen.
⚠ Lithium-ion micromobility devices (e-bikes, scooters) must meet UL 2849/EN 15194/UL 2272/EN 17128 standards, and the owner must be present and awake whenever the device is charging.
⚠ Renters insurance is mandatory: residents must obtain coverage and complete the Renters Insurance Attestation Form in order to check in on move-in day.

Common questions about UC Irvine dorms
- What size bed is in a UC Irvine freshman dorm room?
- Every Mesa Court and Middle Earth room uses a Twin XL (extra-long twin) mattress. UCI's What to Bring page tells residents to buy extra-long twin sheets, 80 in long by 38 in wide. Note that UCI's own 2026-27 furniture table lists the mattress as 36"w x 80"L x 8" thick on a 39"w x 85"d x 36"h frame, so standard Twin XL sheets fit with a little slack.
- Can I bring a mini-fridge or microwave to my dorm room?
- A UL-approved mini-fridge up to 4.3 cubic feet is allowed in-room. Standalone microwaves are not permitted in bedrooms; only an approved micro-fridge combo unit is allowed (rentable through UCI-endorsed Micro Fridge, Inc.), and other electrical cooking appliances must stay in the shared hall kitchen.
- Are UC Irvine dorms air conditioned?
- No. UCI Student Housing states "No air conditioning available" for both the classic halls and the towers at Mesa Court and Middle Earth. UCI does not ban personal fans — it actually lists a fan on its What to Bring page as an item to consider, which is worth packing for Irvine's warm September move-in.
- When is freshman move-in for fall 2026?
- Move-in for Mesa Court and Middle Earth is September 19-20, 2026 (Arroyo Vista is September 19 only). UCI sends your housing assignment email in early September with instructions to sign up for a move-in arrival window; slots are allocated in 30-minute increments on a strictly first-come, first-served basis.
- Is on-campus housing required for UC Irvine freshmen?
- It isn't mandated. UCI states that freshmen enrolling for fall 2026 are eligible for two years of on-campus housing if the housing application is completed by May 15, 2026; the Statement of Intent to Register must be submitted by May 1, 2026 to access the housing application, and students must live on campus their entire first year to keep the second-year guarantee.
