UC Santa Cruz Freshman Dorms 2026

UC Santa Cruz houses first-years through its 10 residential colleges (Cowell, Stevenson, Crown, Merrill, Porter, Kresge, Rachel Carson, Oakes, College Nine, and John R. Lewis), and most freshmen live in triple rooms within their assigned college's own halls. Every room ships with the same extra-long twin bed and mattress (39 by 80 inches). Portable and window air conditioners are banned campus-wide, and UCSC housing lists no air conditioning as an amenity in any residence hall, so plan on cooling without one. New freshmen entering fall 2026 move in by appointment September 17-19, with sign-ups opening in the Housing Portal on August 20, 2026.

What to bring to UC Santa Cruzdorms — and what’s already there

Every Santa Cruzfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

Portable and window air conditioners are banned campus-wide and UCSC housing lists no air conditioning in any residence hall, so plan cooling alternatives for a warm mid-September move-in.

Toasters, toaster ovens, and hot plates with exposed heating elements are prohibited in every residence hall, even shared kitchens.

Missing your housing application deadline after receiving your college assignment can forfeit the freshman housing guarantee — the deadline is emailed individually, not posted on a single fixed date.

Canceling assigned housing gets more expensive over time: $150 on or before July 1, $250 July 2 through August 1, and $350 on or after August 2, 2026.

Common questions about UC Santa Cruz dorms

What size bed do UCSC dorm rooms have?
Every room comes with an extra-long twin bed and mattress (39 by 80 inches) — bring extra-long twin sheets to match, since standard twin sheets won't fit.
Can I bring a mini-fridge or microwave?
Yes. You're welcome to bring a mini-fridge and/or microwave, but you only need one of each per room, so coordinate with roommates. Campus partner myMicroFridge also rents MicroFridge combo units, with guaranteed in-room delivery if you order by September 1.
Do UCSC dorms have air conditioning?
No. Portable and window AC units are on the prohibited-items list, and UCSC housing lists no air conditioning as an amenity in any residence hall — plan on a fan and open windows. UCSC does not publish a stated reason or a per-building AC list, so treat this as the campus-wide expectation rather than a building-by-building guarantee.
When is 2026 freshman move-in?
New freshmen move in by appointment September 17-19, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sign-ups for a specific appointment slot open in the Housing Portal on August 20, 2026, the same day move-in instructions go out by email.
What's the deal with UCSC's residential 'colleges'?
UCSC sorts every undergraduate into one of 10 residential colleges — Cowell, Stevenson, Crown, Merrill, Porter, Kresge, Rachel Carson, Oakes, College Nine, and John R. Lewis. Your college determines which residence hall you live in, a required first-year core course, and your day-to-day campus community; you rank your top five preferences during the SIR process, but placements depend on enrollment and availability and aren't guaranteed.
