Living in Santa Cruz Residence Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

UCSB lists Santa Cruz's room type as triples, with doubles and quads also appearing in its virtual tours and floor plans, each furnished with the standard Twin XL bed, desk, chair, dresser, mirror, towel bar, wastebasket, and drapes. As a low-rise, two-story hall, Santa Cruz has a simpler footprint than UCSB's tower halls — less elevator hassle, but less room privacy given the triple-heavy mix. A limited number of rooms are adapted to the needs of physically disabled students and are wheelchair accessible. UCSB's residence hall policy Section 2 permits bunk beds and lofts provided they stay in a position and at a height approved by Housing staff, but no under-bed clearance measurement is published for Santa Cruz, so measure your frame on arrival before committing to storage bins. There's no air conditioning in any UCSB residence hall room, Santa Cruz included — personal AC units are prohibited outright, so bring a fan.

Day to day

Santa Cruz shares its layout with sister hall Anacapa next door: men and women in adjacent wings on each floor connected by stairs, with a large single-gender bathroom on each wing offering multiple sinks, toilet stalls, and private showers. Housekeeping and laundry come with the all-inclusive nine-month contract, and laundry is free with machine status visible in the Speed Queen app. The building features a large community lounge for events and studying, a classroom, a TV room, a recreation room, study lounges and kitchenettes, and its published amenities include a basketball court, volleyball court, surf racks, a piano, and WiFi. De La Guerra is the closest dining commons. Living Learning Communities include the First Year Residential Experience (FYRE) and Chicanx/Latinx Scholars. Nearby are the Marine Biotechnology Laboratory Building, which supports ocean and environmental research and teaching, and an Outdoor Gym with exercise stations — and Campus Point Beach, one of the most popular surfing spots in Santa Barbara, is a short walk away.

Move-in day

Sunday, September 20 is Santa Cruz's main Fall 2026 move-in day, with a limited move-in option on Friday, September 18 (UCSB's schedule lists "all other residence halls" for limited Friday move-in). You select your own day and time from the slots available for your building through the link in your mid-August assignment email. Print your move-in unloading voucher and bring it — it's valid only between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on your move-in day while you're actively unloading, and no return trips are allowed once you've unloaded. Photo ID and a charged phone are required, since all students scan a QR code to check in. Santa Cruz's check-in is at the corner of Lagoon Road and Channel Islands Road on the oceanside; follow Henry T. Yang Drive or Highway 217 to the roundabout, then take the Lagoon Road exit. Because Santa Cruz is a two-story building with no elevator access to the second floor, upper-floor residents should plan for stairs. After unloading, vehicles must move immediately to long-term parking in Parking Structure 10, with shuttle buses running back to the hall. Move-in carts are limited and first-come, first-served, so bring your own hand truck or dolly.

  • Sleep mask + earplugs

Turns a blank wall into a movie night — a floor favorite
  • Waterproof outdoor blanket
For quad hangs, tailgates, and games on damp grass
