Living in Griffiths Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Griffiths is the fourth of the original 1960 Warnecke high-rises in Unit 2, architecturally and functionally consistent with Cunningham, Davidson, and Ehrman. Room types are doubles, triples, and limited singles. All rooms arrive furnished: bed frame, XL twin mattress (80"×36" — slightly narrower than a standard XL twin, so check your sheet sizing), desk, chair, dresser, mirror, closet, and a MicroChill micro-fridge and microwave. The micro-fridge and microwave are provided, so skip those from your shopping list.

Day to day

Bathrooms in Griffiths are communal and shared by floor — no surprises there for a 1960s high-rise. There is no air conditioning, and portable units are banned. A fan is your only approved option for warm nights, and August can genuinely be warm. Café 3 handles most of Unit 2's dining traffic and is the nearest major option for Griffiths residents. The Southside location puts you close to Telegraph Avenue for coffee and supplies.

Move-in day

Griffiths is part of the Unit 2 complex on the Southside of campus. Move-in happens mid-August, coordinated across the four adjacent high-rises. Confirm your assigned check-in window in advance — the buildings are close together and a staggered schedule keeps the loading zones from backing up.

Griffiths Hall FAQ

Does Griffiths Hall have air conditioning?
No — Griffiths Hall has no air conditioning, and neither do any of the other Unit 2 buildings. Portable AC units are explicitly prohibited under Berkeley's Residential Code of Conduct; the rule applies campus-wide. Berkeley's climate is mild for most of the academic year, but August move-in in a 1960-era high-rise that has been closed and unventilated can feel warm. A box or tower fan is the standard and only permitted cooling option. Pack one before you arrive and plan to set it up on your first night. Avoid fans with a heating element, as those are covered by a separate prohibited-appliances rule.
Is a mini-fridge included in Griffiths Hall rooms?
Yes — Berkeley Housing provides a MicroChill unit in every Griffiths Hall room. The MicroChill is a combined appliance: it includes both a compact refrigerator and a microwave in a single unit, already in the room when you arrive. There is no rental fee and nothing to arrange separately — it's a campus-wide standard for all Berkeley freshman halls. Cross both a fridge and microwave off your move-in shopping list. Items you will need to bring: XL twin bedding (sized for an 80"×36" mattress), a desk lamp, a fan, a shower caddy, towels, and toiletries.
What are the bathrooms like in Griffiths Hall?
Griffiths has communal bathrooms shared by the entire floor — the standard arrangement across all four original 1960 Unit 2 high-rises: Cunningham, Davidson, Ehrman, and Griffiths. There are no suite-style or semi-private bathroom options in Griffiths. Everyone on the floor shares the same facilities, which makes morning timing and coordination with your floormates a practical matter in the first weeks of fall semester. A hanging shower caddy and shower sandals are worth including on your packing list. Towle Hall, the 2005 building in Unit 2, offers mini-suite bathrooms shared between just two rooms as an alternative for students who prioritize bathroom privacy.
What dining options are near Griffiths Hall?
Café 3 is the primary dining hall for Unit 2 residents and the closest major on-campus dining option for Griffiths. It's a short walk within the Southside neighborhood and handles most of the daily dining traffic for the Unit 2 complex. When you want something different, Telegraph Avenue is nearby — Berkeley's main Southside commercial corridor has a wide range of coffee shops, restaurants, and quick-service options available most of the day and evening. For a full campus dining option further away, other dining halls are accessible by a longer walk or campus shuttle, but most Griffiths residents default to Café 3 for everyday meals.
