Living in Cunningham Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Cunningham is one of four original 1960 Warnecke high-rises that make up Unit 2's Southside footprint. Rooms come in doubles, triples, and a limited number of singles — the triples are the tightest configuration, so if you land one, plan your furniture footprint carefully. Every room comes furnished with a bed frame and XL twin mattress (80"×36", slightly narrower than a standard XL twin — fitted sheets may run loose), a desk, chair, dresser, mirror, closet, and a MicroChill micro-fridge and microwave. You do not need to bring a mini-fridge.
Day to day
Bathrooms are communal and shared by floor — standard for a 1960s high-rise. Cunningham is built around a central courtyard, which gives the building a contained feel and a natural social gathering spot between the towers. Café 3 is the nearest major dining hall for Unit 2 residents, a short walk from Cunningham. There is no air conditioning anywhere in Unit 2, and portable units are explicitly prohibited; Berkeley's climate is generally mild, but August move-in week can be warm, so a fan is worth packing.
Move-in day
Cunningham sits at 2650 Haste Street on the Southside of campus, putting you close to Telegraph Avenue and the Southside retail strip from day one. Move-in runs mid-August, and the courtyard layout means move-in foot traffic is more contained than at a building with a single exposed entrance lane.
Cunningham Hall FAQ
- Does Cunningham Hall have air conditioning?
- No — Cunningham Hall has no air conditioning, and there is no air conditioning in any Unit 2 building. Portable AC units are explicitly prohibited under Berkeley's Residential Code of Conduct, which applies campus-wide. August in Berkeley is generally mild compared to most of the country, without the summer humidity common elsewhere, but move-in week in a high-rise room that has been closed and unventilated can still feel warm. A box or tower fan is the standard solution and the only permitted cooling option. Set it up before you unpack anything else — the first night matters for sleep quality.
- Does Cunningham Hall provide a mini-fridge and microwave?
- Yes — Berkeley Housing provides a MicroChill unit in every Cunningham Hall room. The MicroChill combines a compact refrigerator and a microwave in a single appliance, and it's already set up in the room when you arrive. There is no rental fee and nothing to arrange in advance. This is a campus-wide standard at UC Berkeley, not something unique to Cunningham. Cross both a fridge and microwave off your shopping list. Items you'll need to bring: XL twin bedding (sized for an 80"×36" mattress), a desk lamp, a fan, a shower caddy, towels, and toiletries — none of those come with the room.
- What are Cunningham Hall bathrooms like?
- Cunningham has communal bathrooms shared by the entire floor — the standard setup across all four original 1960 Unit 2 high-rises: Cunningham, Davidson, Ehrman, and Griffiths. There are no in-room or semi-private bathrooms in Cunningham. In a high-rise with doubles and triples on each floor, that means sharing bathroom facilities with everyone on your level. Morning timing coordination matters, especially in the first few weeks when floor schedules are still being established. A hanging shower caddy and shower sandals are practical additions to your packing list. Towle Hall, the 2005 building in Unit 2, offers mini-suite semi-private bathrooms if that's a priority for your student.
- Where is Cunningham Hall on campus?
- Cunningham is at 2650 Haste Street on Berkeley's Southside, part of the Unit 2 complex built around a central courtyard. The location puts you within easy walking distance of Telegraph Avenue — Berkeley's main Southside commercial corridor — as well as Café 3, which is the primary dining hall for Unit 2 residents. From Cunningham, the walk to the center of main campus takes about ten to fifteen minutes depending on the building. The Telegraph corridor gives you access to coffee shops, restaurants, bookstores, and everyday supplies without needing to go far from the building.
