Living in Freeborn Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Freeborn is one of the four original 1960 Warnecke high-rises in Unit 1, with the same room setup as Cheney, Deutsch, and Putnam — doubles and triples, with every room furnished with an XL twin bed (80"×36"), desk, chair, dresser, mirror, closet, and a MicroChill micro-fridge and microwave combo. What sets Freeborn apart is a designated Substance-Free Environment floor program: students who want that living agreement opt in and are placed on that floor.
Day to day
Bathrooms are community-style, shared by floor. Residents on the substance-free floor share that space with others who signed the same living agreement, which many students find makes for a quieter, more consistent floor culture. Crossroads café is the primary dining option for Freeborn residents.
Move-in day
Move-in at Freeborn follows the same mid-August timeline as the rest of Unit 1. High-rise elevators help with the heavy load, but expect waits on move-in day — smaller, lighter boxes move faster than large bins in an elevator queue. No air conditioning; a fan is a must-pack.
