Living in Blackwell Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Blackwell is UC Berkeley's newest residence hall — an 8-story building with modern room layouts. Most rooms are doubles; singles are limited. Every room includes a bed frame and XL twin mattress (80"×36"), desk, chair, dresser, mirror, closet, and a MicroChill unit, and high-speed Wi-Fi, gas, electric, water, and garbage/recycling/compost service are all included in housing. The building was purpose-built for students, so the bones are more contemporary than the older halls on campus.
Day to day
On-site amenities include a fitness center, an academic center, and study lounges on every floor — so students can stay in the building to work without retreating to the library. The lobby has pool and ping-pong tables. Café 3, one of Berkeley's main dining halls, is one block away. Blackwell is consistently regarded as one of the most desirable freshman placements on campus.

Move-in is mid-August. Blackwell is one block from the main campus, which is about as central as freshman housing gets at Berkeley. The location makes the first-year campus navigation learning curve noticeably shorter — most major academic buildings are within a reasonable walk.
