  • Half-lofting -- raising one bed while the other stays flat -- is not supported on the wooden frames, and Housing offers no demonstration or support for it. This note appears identically on all four Eastway hall pages, so it is not an Allyn-specific limitation.
  • Bathroom setup varies by room: Kent State's Allyn page shows a standard double, a double with private bath, and a communal restroom diagram. Do not assume a private bath -- confirm your assignment before shopping.

Living in Allyn Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Allyn's rooms are built around Kent State's junior loftable furniture package: two extra-long twin beds (Kent State publishes the mattress as 36 in x 80 in) that can be lofted or bunked in several configurations, desks with chairs, dressers, shelves, closets, and a fridge/freezer/microwave unit provided by University Housing. Kent State's page says Allyn is comprised mostly of double rooms, and the university's Quick Reference Guide lists Allyn only under 'Double Rooms' -- single rooms at Kent State are in Centennial Court C, Engleman, Leebrick, McDowell and Verder, not Allyn. Room diagrams on Allyn's page show a standard double, a double with a private bath, and communal restrooms with an ADA-accessible shower and toilet, so bathroom arrangements differ room to room. Because the furniture is loftable rather than bunk-only, roommates can raise one or both beds to free up floor space for storage bins or a small rug -- but Housing does not support half-lofting the wooden frames.

Day to day

Allyn sits in Kent State's Eastway complex alongside Clark, Fletcher and Manchester -- four halls dedicated in 1963 that together form the Eastway Experience, the only on-campus area exclusively housing first-year students. Kent State describes Allyn as co-ed with four floors. All four Eastway halls state on their own pages that every room is carpeted and air conditioned. Each Kent State hall has its own common-area kitchen with a stove, elevator, and break housing, and washers and dryers are available in each hall or hall complex at no additional cost. Allyn and Clark share a Residence Hall Director, an Assistant Residence Hall Director and fourteen Resident Assistants with Fletcher and Manchester, and Allyn and Clark run a joint Hall Council. University Housing runs required preventive maintenance in every room twice a year. Allyn's population is roughly 245 first-year students, which means the whole building is on the same academic calendar and adjustment curve.

Move-in day

Fall 2026 move-in for Allyn's first-year and transfer students is Wednesday, August 19 and Thursday, August 20, 2026, on Kent State's published per-floor schedule: Day 1 (Aug. 19) Floor 4 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Floor 2 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m.; Day 2 (Aug. 20) Floor 3 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Floor 1 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Even-numbered rooms arrive at the start of their block, odd-numbered rooms halfway through. Returning students across campus arrive August 21-22 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so that later window is not the first-year window. Students who need to arrive earlier can request Early Arrival through the Housing Portal under 'Housing Forms' (Kent State does not publish a fee for it on the move-in pages). Because Allyn rooms come with the fridge/freezer/microwave unit and furniture already in place, families mainly need bedding, storage bins and personal items; Kent State offers 30-Minute Self-Unloading and Express Unloading options on move-in day.
