What to bring to Kent State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Kent Statefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ First- and second-year students enrolled in nine or more credit hours on the Kent campus must live on campus and carry a meal plan until junior standing (60 credit hours) or an approved exemption; non-exempt students who live off campus can have their record placed on an 'ineligible hold' that prevents future registration.

⚠ Only pocketknives (folding blade, pocket-carry) or basic cooking knives used for cooking are permitted; all other knives are subject to removal and confiscation by Safety & Community Care, with illegal items handled by Kent State University Police Services.

⚠ Window and portable air conditioners are banned campus-wide. The four Eastway first-year halls have built-in air conditioning, but some other halls (Lake and Olson, for example) do not list AC on their own pages -- check the specific hall.

⚠ Kent State's own pages conflict on hot pots: the Hallways Handbook permits a hot pot with a fully enclosed heating element and automatic shut-off, while the 'Your Room' packing list tells students to leave hot pots and plates at home. Confirm with University Housing before bringing one.

Common questions about Kent State University dorms

What size bed is in a Kent State dorm room?

Every room has an extra-long twin mattress that Kent State lists as 36" x 80" on both its 'Your Room' page and its Housing FAQ -- bring extra-long twin sheets, not standard twin. Note that 36 in is Kent State's own published figure and is narrower than the 38 in commonly sold as 'twin XL,' so sheets sized for a standard twin XL will still fit.

Are freshmen required to live on campus at Kent State?

Yes. First- and second-year students enrolled in nine or more credit hours on the Kent campus must live in the residence halls and hold a meal plan until they reach junior standing (60 credit hours) or qualify for an exemption, such as living with a parent or guardian within a fifty-mile driving distance of the Kent campus.

Can I bring my own fridge or microwave?

You don't need to -- Kent State's Quick Reference Guide lists a fridge/freezer/microwave combo unit as provided in all halls. Rooms are limited to one fridge and one microwave for electrical-capacity and safety reasons; an additional microfridge requires an approved accommodation from Student Accessibility Services, and Housing supplies that unit.

Are Kent State dorms air conditioned?

It varies by building. The four Eastway first-year halls (Allyn, Clark, Fletcher, Manchester) each state on their own housing page that all rooms are carpeted and have air conditioning, as do Johnson and Stopher in the Quad. Lake and Olson do not mention air conditioning on their pages, so confirm per hall. Personal window and portable AC units are prohibited campus-wide regardless.

When does Fall 2026 move-in start?

First-year and transfer students move in Wednesday, August 19 and Thursday, August 20, 2026, in assigned floor blocks (9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2 p.m.-5 p.m.), checking in at the residence hall. Returning students arrive Friday, August 21 or Saturday, August 22 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Assigned days come from the Move-In Schedule page and the Housing Portal.
