What to bring to Miami Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Miami OHfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Residence hall students are required to purchase a Diplomat Meal Plan each semester as part of the housing contract.

⚠ First- and second-year full-time students must live in the residence halls through the spring semester of their second year, with four published automatic exemptions (age 21+ by the first day of class, living with parents or legal guardians within 50 miles of Oxford, living with a spouse or dependent children, or two-plus full-time years already completed at another institution).

⚠ Student-built lofts, platforms, and bed risers are prohibited campus-wide; beds may be bunked or un-bunked only by or under the supervision of authorized University staff.

⚠ Miami's move-in page warns you can 'avoid unnecessary charges when you move-out' by skipping tape and command strips of any type — white putty, plasti-tac, and s-hooks on the picture rail molding are the approved alternatives, and nails are not permitted.

⚠ E-bikes, e-scooters, and other lithium-battery mobility devices are prohibited in residence halls as a fire hazard.

Common questions about Miami University dorms

What size are the beds in Miami University dorms?

Every hall page lists the same spec: a Twin-XL low-loft style bed with bed rail measuring 85" x 36", holding an 80" x 36" mattress. Hall pages note a dresser fits underneath (Porter's says a dresser and bookcase fit), but Miami does not publish an under-bed height in inches.

Do Miami University residence halls have air conditioning?

It varies by building, so check your specific hall. Collins, Porter, and Havighurst each list 'Air-conditioned' in their own building amenities. Miami's housing-rates page says Standard (renovated or new-construction) halls have 'air conditioning and heating' and that Traditional rooms are 'typically air conditioned' — note that hedge. Ogden's own page doesn't itemize AC at all despite its 2024 renovation, so confirm with Residence Life.

Is a fridge or microwave provided?

A mini refrigerator is provided in every room — Miami lists it as 33.6" H x 18.5" W x 19.5" D (3.6 cu. ft.). Privately-owned refrigerators are not permitted. You may bring your own microwave at 700 watts or less, one per room, and shared microwaves are available in corridor kitchens.

When do first-year students move in for fall 2026?

Generally Thursday and Friday, August 20 and 21, 2026 — but the quad move-in maps differ: East Quad, MET Quad, Ogden, and South Quad are Thursday and Friday, while North Quad and Western Campus run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Assignment emails with your specific day and time block go out on a rolling basis from mid-July, and Miami's admitted-students page says room assignment info is sent by the end of July. If you have to book flights before that email lands, Miami's own advice is that first-year students should plan to arrive on Friday, August 21.
