Youngstown State University Freshman Dorms 2026

YSU has no blanket residency requirement for domestic first-year students — housing is 'highly recommended,' not mandatory — but international first-years face a separate, real mandate to live on campus their first year. Beds in every hall are fixed and cannot be lofted, bunked, or raised, so skip any storage plan built around bed height. All rooms are air-conditioned. Fall 2026 new-resident move-in is Wednesday, August 19; returning residents move in Friday, August 21.

What to bring to Youngstown State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every YSUfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

No room key without three things at check-in: your bill (tuition AND housing) paid in full or on a payment plan with the first installment paid, full-time enrollment (12+ credit hours undergrad), and a photo ID.

Beds in every YSU hall are fixed and cannot be lofted, bunked, or raised — loft kits and bed raisers are explicitly prohibited items.

All incoming undergraduate international students are required to live in university housing for their first year at YSU (Fall 2026 policy) — domestic first-years face no such requirement.

Kilcawley House is offline for the 2026-27 academic year and not available to any student this cycle.

Common questions about Youngstown State University dorms

Is freshman housing required at Youngstown State?
No — YSU has no general housing requirement for domestic first-year students; the university 'highly recommends' living on campus but doesn't mandate it. The one exception is international students, who are required to live in university housing their first year.
Can you loft or raise your bed at YSU?
No. Beds in YSU residence halls are fixed-height and cannot be lofted, bunked, or raised — the prohibited-items list explicitly bans 'lofts, loft kits, or bed raisers.'
What does it cost to apply for YSU housing, and is a meal plan required?
There's a one-time, non-refundable $35 application fee. Meal plans are mandatory and automatically billed for residents of Cafaro, Lyden, Kilcawley, and Wick — everyone defaults to the 12 Bronze plan. Weller House is the exception.
Which YSU hall will I be eligible for?
Cafaro House is reserved for Honors College students. Lyden House is open to all students regardless of class year or program. Kilcawley House would normally be open to all first-year-eligible students but is offline for the 2026-27 academic year.
