What to bring to Ohio Statedorms — and what’s already there

Every Ohiofreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

Common questions about Ohio State dorms

When does Ohio State send housing assignments?

OSU typically releases freshman housing assignments in mid-to-late July. You will receive an email through your Ohio State account with your specific hall and room number. This matters more at OSU than at many schools because the halls vary significantly: Siebert Hall has no AC, while the North Residential towers (Morrill, Lincoln, Drackett, Taylor) have full AC, and corridor halls like Nosker and Park-Stradley have partial AC coverage. Do not buy AC-dependent items until you know your specific assignment. Wait for the email before buying.

Do all Ohio State dorms have air conditioning?

No — not all halls. Morrill, Lincoln, Drackett, and Taylor towers have full central AC throughout. Siebert Hall is the exception in North Residential: it has no air conditioning at all and is the only North hall without it. Corridor halls including Nosker, Park-Stradley, Smith-Steeb, Canfield, Archer, Raney, and South Residential have AC on some floors but not others — your floor assignment matters. Check your specific hall and floor before deciding whether to pack a fan. When in doubt, bring one.

Can I bring a mini-fridge to Ohio State?

No — and you don't need to. Every freshman hall at Ohio State comes with a combination fridge/freezer/microwave unit already installed in the room. It's provided and shared by roommates. Bringing a personal fridge or a personal microwave on top of that is prohibited and can result in confiscation. The provided unit is sized for two people and is yours to use for the full academic year. If you want additional cold storage, that's a policy conversation with your RA, not something you can bring unilaterally.

Can I loft my bed in Ohio State dorms?

You cannot build or bring your own loft — self-constructed lofts are prohibited at Ohio State. Institutional lofting is available in some halls through OSU Housing; submit a service request, but expect at least a one-week turnaround and know that it is not available in every building. Some students use Bedloft.com, a third-party rental service, as an alternative. Morrill Tower has 32 inches of under-bed clearance when the frame is at standard height, which gives decent storage without lofting. Check your specific hall before committing to a loft plan.

Can I bring a moving truck to Ohio State move-in?

No commercial moving trucks — U-Haul, Penske, Budget, and similar rental vehicles — are allowed on campus during move-in. Ohio State assigns specific arrival windows to manage traffic; you'll get your designated time window in your assignment email. The university provides luggage carts and volunteer help on move-in day, so the expectation is personal vehicles with manageable loads rather than a full truck. If you need to ship items, use a shipping service that delivers to campus rather than a moving truck that drives onto it.
