Living in Siebert Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Siebert Hall rooms are traditional doubles arranged along a corridor floor plan, with two residents sharing a compact but functional space. Ohio State furnishes every room with a bed frame and XL twin mattress measuring 80 by 36 inches, a desk and chair, a dresser, a combination fridge-freezer-microwave unit, and a trash and recycling bin. The bed frames are adjustable so under-bed clearance is not fixed — take stock of the actual clearance at move-in before committing to a storage strategy. Items OSU does not provide include bedding, a pillow, towels, a desk lamp, hangers, and a shower caddy — the room is manageable, but with two people and two full loads of belongings, every cubic foot counts.
Day to day
Siebert is a 10-story traditional corridor-style hall in the North Residential area with tight-knit floor communities. Community bathrooms are shared by the entire floor, so establishing bathroom etiquette with neighbors early makes a real difference. The hall is close to North Residential dining and the rest of the complex. The one thing that sets Siebert apart from every other hall in North Residential — and not in a good way — is that it is the only building in the cluster with no air conditioning. Columbus in August is not a dry Western heat; it is humid, heavy air that sits in a room with no airflow. A high-velocity tower fan is not a comfort item here, it is a functional necessity.
Move-in day
Move-in at Siebert Hall takes place in late August when Columbus temperatures routinely exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity, and you will feel every degree of it in an un-air-conditioned room on an upper floor. Plan your packing with that in mind: light, breathable bedding is not a preference, it is a survival decision. Bring your tower fan in the car with you rather than shipping it ahead so it is the first thing you can set up. The elevator in a 10-story hall on move-in day is predictably competitive, so arriving earlier in your assigned window gives you a real advantage.
