Living in Archer House: what to know before you pack
The room
Archer House is a four-story hall in the Torres/Archer complex within South Residential, offering traditional double rooms along a standard corridor layout. Every room is furnished with a bed frame, an XL twin mattress (80 by 36 inches), a desk, a chair, a dresser, overhead lighting, and a combination fridge/freezer/microwave unit provided by the university. Bed frames are adjustable, giving you flexibility to raise the bed height for additional storage underneath without building anything yourself. Students are responsible for bringing their own bedding, pillows, towels, desk lamp, hangers, and shower caddy — these are not included.
Day to day
Archer House's four-story scale creates a close community that feels distinct from the larger residential towers on campus. Being part of the Torres/Archer complex means residents share common spaces and programming with a neighboring hall, which can expand your social circle beyond your immediate floor. The South Residential location puts dining, study spaces, and green areas within comfortable walking distance. Community bathrooms are shared by floor, so hallmates tend to establish informal routines around peak-use morning hours fairly quickly.
Move-in day
Archer House move-in falls in late August, when Columbus temperatures routinely top 85°F and humidity is high. The four-story building means fewer floors to navigate than the North towers, but the heat is the same regardless of building height — wear light clothing and drink water before you start unloading. Air conditioning at Archer House is partial and varies by floor, so once your room assignment arrives, confirm whether your floor is cooled and pack fans if it is not. Stick to your assigned move-in window to keep the complex's loading area from backing up.

Archer House FAQ
- Does Archer House have air conditioning?
- Archer House has partial air conditioning that is not uniform across all floors. Once you receive your room assignment, contact OSU Residence Life to confirm whether your specific floor is climate-controlled before you finalize your packing list. Late August in Columbus is reliably hot and humid, with temperatures regularly topping 85°F during move-in week and the first few weeks of the semester, so residents on non-AC floors should bring a box fan or tower fan as a necessity, not a luxury. Personal window AC units are prohibited in all OSU residence halls. Pack a fan regardless of your expected assignment — it costs little to bring and is never wasted even on a cooled floor.
- What is Archer House's location on campus?
- Archer House is part of the Torres/Archer complex in South Residential, located on the south end of Ohio State's main campus. It sits within walking distance of the South Residential dining facility, making breakfast and dinner convenient without needing to cross campus. For most academic buildings, the Oval, and the Ohio Union, students are typically looking at a short CABS bus ride or a 10 to 15 minute walk. Students with frequent classes in North Campus buildings — which are a meaningful distance from the south end — should plan their daily schedule with that commute factored in and familiarize themselves with the CABS bus routes that run between South and North Residential areas.
- Can I bring my own mini-fridge to Archer House?
- No — personal mini-fridges and personal microwaves are prohibited by OSU policy in all residence hall rooms, including Archer House. Ohio State supplies a combination fridge/freezer/microwave unit in every room, already installed and waiting, so you have appliances for cold storage and reheating without bringing anything yourself. This rule catches a lot of incoming students off guard — it is among the most common items that get turned away or sent home on move-in day. Do not buy a mini-fridge over the summer assuming you will need one; there is no exception process and no appeal. Redirect that budget toward what the university does not supply: XL twin bedding, bath towels, a desk lamp, hangers, and a shower caddy.
- What does OSU provide in every room including Archer House?
- Every Ohio State residence hall room, including Archer House, comes with a bed frame, an XL twin mattress (80 by 36 inches), a desk, a chair, a dresser, overhead lighting, a trash bin, a recycling bin, and a combination fridge/freezer/microwave unit. What is not provided — and what students frequently forget — includes bedding, a pillow, towels, a desk lamp, hangers, a shower caddy, and any area rug. Bring those from home or plan to pick them up before or shortly after move-in.
- Is Archer House a good hall to live in?
- That depends on what you're optimizing for, but here's what's verified: Archer House has XL Twin · 80"×36" beds with Adjustable frame · clearance varies of under-bed storage, and is only partially air conditioned. Ohio State provides Bed frame & XL twin mattress, desk, chair, dresser, combination fridge/freezer/microwave unit, trash & recycling bin, overhead lighting in every room. Compare those specifics against your priorities — or see how Archer House stacks up against Ohio State's other halls above.
Thinking About Living in Archer House Next Year?
If you're choosing housing for next year rather than packing for move-in, here's what's already verified about Archer House: it has XL Twin · 80"×36" beds with Adjustable frame · clearance varies of under-bed clearance, and AC is only partial in this building — some rooms have it, some don't. On top of that, the room comes with Bed frame & XL twin mattress, desk, chair, dresser, combination fridge/freezer/microwave unit, trash & recycling bin, overhead lighting; you'll need to bring Bedding, pillow, towels, desk lamp, hangers, shower caddy, area rug yourself; Candles, wax warmers, incense, open-flame items, space heaters, toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers, hot plates, rice cookers, Instant Pots, personal fridges, personal microwaves, self-constructed lofts isn't allowed. The full day-to-day breakdown above covers the room, the building, and move-in day in more depth.
