What to bring to Ohio Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every OHIOfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Appliances over 1,000 watts are prohibited housing-wide, and the handbook specifically bans space heaters, air fryers, toaster ovens, toasters, grills, sandwich makers, woks, waffle irons, hot plates, electric skillets, crockpots, insta-pots and rice cookers -- check wattage before packing any kitchen gadget.

⚠ Personal window, floor, and freestanding air conditioners are banned in every hall, because OHIO already provides either a built-in HVAC unit or a university-installed window AC unit in every room -- ohio.edu confirms "all of our residence hall rooms have air conditioning."

⚠ Dormer rooms with slanted ceilings or walls will not accommodate a bed loft. Entire fourth floors are excluded in Biddle, Bush, Gamertsfelder, Jefferson, Lincoln, Perkins, Voigt, Washington, Boyd, James, Ryors, Sargent, Treudley and Wilson, plus many named third-floor rooms -- check the ohio.edu/housing/bedlofts room list against your assignment before ordering a Bedloft.com rental.

⚠ Separately from lofting, some beds have fixed frames that cannot be raised or lowered at all: quads in Brown, Crawford, Mackinnon and Pickering, and all rooms in Tiffin Hall. Those beds allow only 15 inches of under-bed clearance, versus up to 24 inches for a lifted bed elsewhere.

⚠ Extension cords are prohibited entirely. Only surge protectors with an attached cord and an on/off switch are allowed, and the microfridge and the window AC unit must each be plugged directly into their own separate wall outlet.

⚠ There are no wired Ethernet connections anywhere in the residence halls, including student rooms -- all spaces are Wi-Fi only, so leave routers and Ethernet cables at home.

What size bed does Ohio University provide?

An extra-long twin: an 80-inch by 36-inch mattress (7.5 inches deep) on an 84.5-inch by 38.25-inch frame, so pack XL twin sheets rather than standard twin.

Are freshmen required to live on campus at Ohio University?

Yes. OHIO requires all enrolled students under age 21 with fewer than four fall/spring semesters in the residence halls to live in university-owned housing with the associated mandatory meal plan, with limited exemptions (part-time enrollment, veterans, married or single parents, approved Greek housing, commuters living with a parent within 50 driving miles of Athens, and documented medical or financial hardship).

Does every room have a fridge and microwave?

Yes, every room comes with one Absocold combination refrigerator/microwave unit shared by the room -- 2.9 cubic feet in singles, doubles and triples, and a larger 4.8 cubic foot unit in quads. Personal additional refrigerators and personal microwaves are not permitted.

Can I bring my own air conditioner?

No. Ohio University states that all residence hall rooms have air conditioning, provided as either a built-in HVAC unit or a university-installed window AC unit, and the housing handbook prohibits the installation of personal air conditioners in both window and floor/freestanding models.

When do first-year students move in for Fall 2026?

First-year move-in is Thursday, August 20 and Friday, August 21, 2026, but each hall is assigned only one of those two days. On East Green, Biddle, Gamertsfelder, Jefferson, Johnson, Shively and Voigt move in Thursday and Bush, Lincoln, Perkins, Tiffin and Washington move in Friday. On South Green, Mackinnon, McDavis North and Pickering move in Thursday and Brown and Crawford move in Friday. On West Green, Ryors, Sargent and Wilson move in Thursday and Boyd, James and Treudley move in Friday. Within your day, the two-hour block is set by floor: floors 1 and 4 at 9-11 a.m., floor 3 at 12-2 p.m., floor 2 at 3-5 p.m.
