Living in Doughton Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Standard Doughton Hall rooms measure roughly 16' x 12'5" and house two students in a traditional, co-ed-by-room layout. Each side gets a movable bed frame, a 3-drawer chest, a wardrobe with a mirror inside (no built-in closets), a desk, and a desk chair, with vinyl flooring throughout. Ground-floor rooms have security screens. The room ships with a wired data port per bed plus building-wide wireless. Furniture is freestanding, so roommates can rearrange the layout, but the 60-inch bed frames themselves only raise to full height or lower to 3/4 height rather than lofting or stacking, and bed risers are not permitted on this frame type. Residents supply their own XL-twin bedding, storage bins, and any small appliances within the university's wattage limits.

Day to day

Doughton runs on a traditional community-bathroom model, with common baths and an ADA-accessible bathroom on every floor. The main lobby has a television and kitchen facilities, and the hall includes vending machines on ID-card swipe plus a water bottle filling station. Laundry is included in the housing fee and located in-building. As a first-year-designated hall, Doughton places new students together and requires a dining meal plan.

Move-in day

Doughton's incoming first-year residents move in during App State's August 11-13, 2026 window, choosing a specific appointment time in the University Housing Portal after room selection; appointments can be changed until August 1. Families get a 30-minute curbside unloading window before needing to move vehicles, so arriving close to the assigned time tends to go faster. A mandatory residence hall meeting with Appalachian Orientation Leaders (Appol Corps) follows at 7pm on Thursday, August 13.

For quad hangs, tailgates, and games on damp grass
