North Carolina State University Freshman Dorms 2026
NC State requires all incoming first-year students to live in University Housing — two semesters for fall admits, three for summer admits, one for spring admits — a policy in place since Fall 2017. Most new freshmen land in suite- or hall-style residence halls on West and Main Campus with extra-long twin beds (36" x 80" x 7") and a MicroFridge microwave/fridge/freezer combo in every room. NC State's Costs page states the housing rate covers a furnished room, the MicroFridge, air conditioning, all utilities and laundry. Fall 2026 move-in runs August 13-16, with paid early arrival available starting August 11.

What to bring to North Carolina State Universitydorms — and what’s already there
Every NC Statefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.
⚠ Personal air conditioners are banned campus-wide — University Housing's What to Bring page lists them under "leave these at home," alongside space heaters and extension cords.
⚠ First-year students cannot move in before August 13 without approval; early arrival (Aug 11-12) costs $50/night and must be requested by 8 a.m. on Monday, August 3.
⚠ The live-on requirement allows only limited financial-hardship, medical/disability, religious, or within-15-miles-of-campus appeals, with a June 15 deadline for fall admits (June 1 for summer start, November 15 for spring).
⚠ Toasters and air fryers are prohibited in residence halls and allowed only in apartment kitchens — as are all other open-coil heating-element appliances, hot plates and burners.

- An extra-long twin: 36" x 80" x 7", per University Housing's FAQ. Nearly all residence hall beds can be lofted, except North Hall and some rooms in the Avent Ferry Complex.
- What should first-year students bring to NC State?

- When do first-year students move into NC State housing for Fall 2026?
- Fall 2026 move-in runs Thursday, August 13 through Sunday, August 16. Thursday through Saturday, check-in is by appointment from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Housing added extra 4 p.m. appointment slots), with no-appointment check-in at Service Desks from 5 to 8 p.m. those same evenings. Sunday, August 16 is open check-in at Service Desks from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., no appointment needed. There is no separate first-year-only date -- all residents share the same window.
