Living in Owen Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Owen is a traditional hall-style building: rooms line both sides of each hallway, with community bathrooms and lounge or kitchen space serving the floor. Rooms are typically two-person doubles with loftable extra-long twin beds (36" x 80" x 7"), a desk and chair per resident, and -- unlike Owen's suite-style counterparts across campus -- an in-room sink and closets in many rooms, with a wardrobe provided where a closet isn't built in. Each room includes a MicroFridge combo unit and WiFi throughout. Owen is part of the TOTA community (Tucker, Owen, Turlington, Alexander) and is home to the Exploratory Studies Village, a living-learning community for students who haven't declared a major.

Day to day

Two community bathrooms per floor serve Owen's hall-style layout, cleaned by housekeeping. Community kitchens are on the first and third floors, lounges are in the basement, and laundry facilities are in the building. Elevators were installed in 2020. Outside, the TOTA beach is the community's hangout spot, with a zen garden and a beach volleyball court lined with benches and tables for studying; Owen also oversees Wolf Plaza and has a green space out front. The TOTA halls sit centrally on Main Campus, and Owen's service desk and computer lab are at Holmes Hall. Air conditioning is included in the cost of housing per NC State's Costs page -- Owen's TOTA neighbor Tucker lists "Air Conditioning: Yes" outright.

Move-in day

Owen residents check in at the Holmes Hall Service Desk, entered from Cates Avenue -- not at Owen itself. The Fall 2026 schedule matches the rest of campus: appointment check-in Thursday, August 13 through Saturday, August 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with added 4 p.m. slots), no-appointment Service Desk check-in from 5 to 8 p.m. those evenings, then open Service Desk check-in Sunday, August 16 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Owen residents are specifically told to unload and immediately relocate their vehicle to long-term parking rather than leaving it in the unloading zone. Early arrival (August 11-12) requires approval and a $50-per-night fee, requested by 8 a.m. on August 3.

  • Gym bag / duffel (with shoe pocket)

  • Sleep mask + earplugs

Turns a blank wall into a movie night — a floor favorite
  • Waterproof outdoor blanket
For quad hangs, tailgates, and games on damp grass

Owen Hall FAQ

Where does Owen Hall move-in check-in happen?
At the Holmes Hall Service Desk on Cates Avenue, not at Owen Hall itself -- Holmes is Owen's service desk year-round.
What living-learning community is in Owen Hall?
Owen is home to the Exploratory Studies Village, a community for students who haven't declared a major, within the larger TOTA community -- Tucker, Owen, Turlington and Alexander residence halls.
Does Owen Hall have air conditioning?
Yes. NC State's Costs page states the housing rate includes air conditioning, and Owen's TOTA neighbor Tucker Hall lists "Air Conditioning: Yes" explicitly. Owen's own features box omits the line, but that's a gap in Housing's page template -- no NC State hall page lists air conditioning as "No."
Is Owen Hall suite-style or hall-style?
Hall-style -- its features listing says "Room Style: Hall-style," with two community bathrooms per floor, unlike the suite layout in Sullivan, Lee, and Bragaw.
Is Owen Hall a good hall to live in?
That depends on what you're optimizing for, but here's what's verified: Owen Hall has Extra-long twin, 36" x 80" x 7" beds with Loftable, height-adjustable frame of under-bed storage, and is fully air conditioned. North Carolina State University provides Community kitchens on the 1st and 3rd floors, in-room sink, closets in many rooms, basement lounges, TOTA beach with zen garden and beach volleyball court, laundry facilities, elevators (installed 2020), smoke detectors and fire sprinklers in every room. Compare those specifics against your priorities — or see how Owen Hall stacks up against North Carolina State University's other halls above.
