Living in Ottawa House East and West: what to know before you pack

The room

Ottawa House rooms sit inside suites rather than standalone doubles: most suites house four students across two double bedrooms, with a limited number of five-person suites pairing one triple bedroom with two single bedrooms. Every suite includes its own private bathroom and a furnished living room shared by suitemates, so residents aren't walking down a public hallway to shower. Bedrooms come with an XL twin bed on an adjustable low-loft frame, a closet or wardrobe, a dresser, a desk and chair, plus window blinds and ceiling lights already installed. The furnished common area comes with couches and chairs, giving suitemates a shared space to study or hang out without leaving the suite.

Day to day

Ottawa House spans two buildings, Ottawa East and Ottawa West. A dining hall -- the Food Hall -- is located within Ottawa East, so residents are steps from a meal without leaving the building in bad weather. The hall is co-ed throughout, with shared kitchens and study and lounge spaces on top of the in-suite living rooms, plus coin-free laundry, a workout room, a computer lab in Ottawa East, secure access, vending machines, and outdoor bike storage. Ottawa House is also home to the Arts Living Learning Community, whose residents get an art studio on their own floor plus a library, piano, and computer lab located in Ottawa East. Its location is closest to Rocket Hall, Gateway, and the Food Hall at Ottawa East.

Move-in day

Ottawa House residents follow the university-wide schedule: first-year students move in Thursday, August 27, 2026, Honors students Wednesday, August 26, and returning students Friday, August 28. UToledo instructs students to watch their UToledo email later in the summer for instructions on selecting an appointment timeslot for their assigned date, so families should plan around that specific window rather than an open drop-in. Because suites are shared with two to four other students, coordinating who's bringing shared items -- a vacuum, dish soap, cleaning supplies for the common living room -- before move-in day saves a duplicate trip. Ottawa East's on-site Food Hall means new residents can grab a meal immediately after unloading instead of searching campus on day one.
